Tye Sheridan has said that he would be game to return for Ready Player Two. Ready Player One, which was released in 2018, was a box office success, grossing $582 million worldwide against a sizable budget of $175 million. The adaptation also was a hit with critics and fans alike, currently resting at a fresh 72 percent critical and 77 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Sheridan can currently be seen in the Quibi original series, Wireless, which hit the platform in early September.
Ready Player One, which is based on the beloved novel by Ernest Cline, takes place in a future where there is a virtual reality system used all over the world called the Oasis, where the majority of humanity spends their days. When the creator of the Oasis passes away, a posthumous challenge is revealed to all of the system's users, which will grant the winner his entire fortune and control of his technology. The film, which was directed by Steven Spielberg, stars Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. It was previously announced that Cline is releasing a Ready Player Two novel this November, which has incited speculation about a possible live-action sequel. In fact, it appears Sheridan has been asked frequently about the possibility of a follow-up.
In an interview on ComicBook's Instagram live series Talking Shop, Tye Sheridan discussed the likelihood of a Ready Player One sequel. When discussing his reaction to passionate fans constantly asking him about a sequel, Sheridan stated,
"You know, 'Is there going to be sequel?' And I think everybody's well aware that Ernie Cline is releasing a Ready Player Two, the novel. You know, but people keep asking me and I would love to have an answer for you and I think people, you know, will and can speculate all they want, but I don't really know what the plan is yet. I have my fingers crossed and, of course, I think it's a great and I loved working on that film, so yeah, I hope, I hope we get to do another."
While Cline's follow-up to Ready Player One will be hitting bookshelves this fall, there hasn't yet been any word on whether or not a live-action sequel will be on its way as well. However, if a sequel does come to pass, it's questionable whether or not Spielberg would return to helm the film. Though Sheridan isn't confirmed for a sequel either, co-star Olivia Cooke has previously stated that she is signed on for sequels if they are greenlit by the studio, but that could certainly change.
Spielberg's adaptation of Cline's wonderful novel was an effective reminder that the director can still deliver a popcorn film as few others can. Between the visuals and bevy of pop-culture character cameos, the film was entertaining from beginning to end, diverting from the source material in some ways that worked and some that did not. However, Ready Player One sets itself up for a possible sequel, which, when coupled with Cline's upcoming novel, certainly can bode well for a second installment. If Cline's novel performs well and the appetite for a sequel is palpable enough, fans may get to see a Ready Player Two sooner rather than later.
