RHONY: Bethenny Frankel Reveals Her Attempts to Get Black Women on RHONY

Bethenny Frankel gave up her apple on The Real Housewives of New York. But, she's opening up about her time on the show and her attempts to bring more diversity to the hit Bravo series.

Bethenny was a fan-favorite on RHONY before she chose to leave after eight seasons. She stood out from other housewives on the show through her transparency with her relationships, marital woes, and success as an entrepreneur. She was also one housewife who wasn't afraid to stick up for herself when met with confrontation. Though she and Dorinda Medley weren't as close during their time on the show, the two have built a stronger friendship following Dorinda's recent firing. Bethenny has been busy tending to her new production company and trying to expand her family since leaving the show. But, RHONY fans haven't stopped expressing their hopes for her return.

The Skinny Girl CEO recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and talked about her time on the show. In addition to speaking on the possibility of coming back to the show, Bethenny revealed her attempts to bring women of color on board. Cohen remained mum when Bethenny spoke about the time she tried to recommend potential housewives, “including several African-American women.” Not wanting to offend the show's executive producer, Bethenny went on to add, “I love you and I love what you guys are doing and I wanted to say that because I got messages about that.” Cohen agreed with the RHONY alum and admitted that she did consistently submit names, like alum Aviva Drescher.

The lack of diversity on the Housewives franchises has been more of a topic in recent years. Garcelle Beauvais became the first Black woman cast on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills last season. Kim Zolciak was the only Caucasian woman cast on The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Though there have been bits of diversity on the franchise, the mixing of cultures has remained a bit stagnant, and fans have taken notice. Following Bethenny's appearance on WWHL, a Twitter user thanked her “for trying to refer black women to #RHONY! I mean it’s NYC. There are black millionaires ‘housewives’ a plenty on the UWS.” Bethenny responded to the tweet saying, “For years, I have submitted black women. We live in NY. This isn’t a new or innovative concept. It’s truth.” When it comes to Bethenny returning to RHONY, she hinted at the possibility if the money is right. There are also reports that Bershawn Shaw could be joining the show next season.
