The Office: Michael Scott's 5 Worst Mistakes (& His 5 Best Decisions)

Michael Scott might be the main character on The Office for most of the series, as well as one of the most memorable figures, but this doesn’t mean he’s the best character on the show. In fact, Micahel makes a lot of awful choices and acts pretty poorly a lot of the time.

Michael has many character flaws and a need to be liked by everyone, but, despite these weaknesses, he has moments where he’s a good person who makes good decisions, too. Here are the best and worst choices from the series.

10 Worst: All of the inappropriate things he said to his employees

It was way too hard to narrow these bad choices down to one moment because there are just so many. He makes fun of his employees for many things including their appearance, and he also makes racist and sexist remarks.

On top of that, there are times when he sexually harasses Pam. He makes so many poor decisions in how he conducts himself at work that it’s impossible to pick just one mistake here.

9 Best: Letting everyone have fun at work

While there are definitely moments where Michael is way too relaxed about work, and he often gets in the way of his employees accomplishing their tasks, sometimes having fun is a good thing.

Letting his employees do things like have movie Mondays or make up a fake Olympics isn’t a bad thing at all. At least in moderation that fosters a good work environment.

8 Worst: When he assaulted Oscar

While there are many times when Michael does inappropriate things to the people who work for him, there is one instance that deserves being called out mostly because it’s so downplayed.

During this episode, Micahel not only says and does many homophobic things and ends up outing Oscar, but he then makes himself into the victim. He forces Oscar to kiss him in front of everyone, and then he gets upset when Oscar is mad at him.

7 Best: Being Dwight’s best man

While Dwight and Micahel have a rather up and down relationship, it was the right decision for Micahel to come back from Colorado to be in Dwight and Angela’s wedding. While Michael didn’t always treat Dwight very well, as he matured somewhat, he became a better person.

By showing up to be Dwight’s best man, he showed that he still cared a lot about Dwight and the people he used to work with even if he had a family of his own now.

6 Worst: Dating a married woman

Micahel’s dating history is rather long and sad in many ways. He dates many women that don’t like him or that he doesn’t like, and he’s just overall bad at relationships.

However, one of the worst mistakes he made in his dating life was to date Donna even after he found out she was married. While he did end up breaking up with her, he was way too casual and justified his actions, as well as hers, when he should have ended it immediately.

5 Best: Quitting Dunder Mifflin to start his own company

This might be a bit of a controversial point because in the real world quitting your job, because you don’t like being told what to do, to start your own company isn’t often a good decision.

However, in the world of The Office, this actually was a good choice. Micahel often wasn’t treated well by the corporate, so the fact that he got back at them and had some success in his own business was a bit of a win.

4 Worst: Taking Jan back after her plastic surgery

While Michael’s relationships with women like Donna, Carol, and Helene were also pretty bad, his worst relationship of all was with Jan. While Michael definitely had his flaws, Jan was downright abusive in many instances, and Micahel clearly wasn’t happy being with her.

However, he rather shallowly decided to get back together with her after she got a breast augmentation which was kind of pathetic of him but also a huge mistake. Their relationship just continued to devolve.

3 Best: Believing in his relationship with Holly

While Jan might have been awful for Micahel, Holly was not. While they both made some mistakes in this relationship, Michael made a great choice in dating her in the first place and also believing that they had something real.

Overall, he wasn’t too pushy about getting back together with her, but he knew that he had strong feelings for her and that their relationship meant something.

2 Worst: Promising money to Scott’s Tots

Michael’s choices to be unprofessional and to even do horrible characters of people were awful, but perhaps the most concrete bad mistake he ever made was to promise money to Scott’s Tots. Instead of being upfront years before their graduations as it was clear that he wouldn’t have the money, he kept up the ruse.

He screwed over an entire class of young people, and it was one of the worst moments he had on the series.

1 Best: Leaving with Holly to Colorado

While Michael spent most of the series saying that Dunder Mifflin was his home, he finally grew out of this harmful mindset when he fell in love with Holly.

Leaving Dunder Mifflin to be with her and eventually raise a family together was the best decision he could have made. Even though it was difficult, it was time for him to move on and start a new chapter in his life.
