Battlestar Galactica Movie Sets Dark Phoenix’s Simon Kinberg To Write

Universal's new Battlestar Galactica movie has set Dark Phoenix's Simon Kinberg as writer and producer. For years, Kinberg was one of the primary architects for Fox's X-Men franchise, serving as a writer and producer for installments such as X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. He transitioned into directing for 2019's Dark Phoenix, one of Fox's final X-Men films, and his latest directorial venture, The 355, is set for release in early 2021.

The Battlestar Galactica franchise is widely considered to be one of the very best in sci-fi, tracking back to the original 1978 television series. Though that show concluded after just one season, Battlestar Galactica evolved into a series that spans numerous platforms: Television, books, comics, and video games. In 2003, Syfy created a miniseries that led to a highly-successful rebooted television show. In the years since Battlestar Galactica's conclusion in 2009, a feature film has been in development at Universal, but progress has been touch and go.

Now Battlestar Galactica has received a major boost of adrenaline. Per Variety, Kinberg has boarded the long-dormant film to write and produce, the latter of which he will do alongside Dylan Clark. Kinberg will not be directing despite his recent forays into the practice. It's been said Kinberg will start his script from scratch, despite other writers trying their hands at drafts. Kinberg said this in a statement:

“‘Battlestar Galactica’ is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring. I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”

Additionally, this Battlestar Galactica feature film will not be connected to the still in-development series from Sam Esmail. The Mr. Robot creator has been developing a new Battlestar Galactica series for NBC's streaming service Peacock since last fall, though there haven't been any major updates recently. Esmail's series will be in the same universe as the 2004 show, but will focus on new characters. As for Kinberg's film, no plot details have been released just yet, and it remains to be seen how it will connect (if at all) to previous pieces of the franchise.

While no timeline was given for Battlestar Galactica, this is the first major news to arrive for the film since Jay Basu signed on to rewrite the script in 2018. Evidently, Basu is no longer attached to the project, and whatever progress that had been made on the story is no longer relevant. Fans will surely be excited to hear about this new development, which could lead to a director signing on if Universal is pleased with Kinberg's script. Between this film and Esmail's television show, the future of Battlestar Galactica is looking bright.
