When it comes to Gilmore Girls, most fans loved watching Lorelai and Rory grow up in their quirky town of Stars Hollow (and yes, despite being an adult at the start of the show, Lorelai definitely did some growing up along the way). There were some more contentious characters, such as the outspoken and elegant Emily Gilmore, or the spoiled Logan Huntzberger, but for the most part, fans were rooting for the same people along the way.
However, with any show as popular as Gilmore Girls was, there are going to be fans that disagree. These viewers may have loved the show, but found Lorelai herself annoying (and that coffee habit just plain abrasive). Some felt like poor Lindsay deserved a little more love, and Sookie deserved a little less - and that's just the start of these unpopular opinions!
10 Liking Emily...As A Villain
Emily Gilmore, Lorelai’s mother and Rory’s grandmother, is a strong and outspoken woman, which causes viewers to either love or hate her. Pile_o_puppies made a good point: Perhaps she should be liked as simply a villain.
She has some moments where she makes her care and support known, but many of her scenes show her being controlling, entitled, and rude. This Reddit user goes on to say, though, that it would have been boring if Lorelai had grown up in a happy home and had a good relationship with her parents.
9 #TeamLindsay
Fans are either #TeamDean, #TeamJess, or #TeamLogan, when it comes to Rory’s boyfriends, but lakencake is #TeamLindsay. While Dean and Rory obviously still liked each other, Dean started dating Lindsay and quickly married her.
The argument for liking this character is that she didn’t do anything to deserve how she was treated. A great example is the scene that shows her in the butcher’s shop, working to get a recipe down perfectly for Dean, who was cheating on her. Lindsay may have been annoying, but she was also just trying her best to be a good wife.
8 Hating Lorelai
As far as unpopular opinions about this show go, a big one would be not enjoying the two main characters. Frasierfiend backs this viewpoint up, though.
This person believes Lorelai is annoying and irritating, due to traits like her sarcasm and how much she talks. They think that Lorelai’s hatred for her parents is unwarranted and that Lorelai ruined Rory's first time having sex (although, arguably, that was ruined by the fact that she had sex with a married man). Are they right in thinking that Lorelai is too wishy-washy in relationships and just really immature?
7 Liking April
Many fans of this series were not fans of April, Luke’s daughter who showed up out of nowhere. And while kbucrock didn’t like that she randomly popped up and caused issues between Luke and Lorelai, they did like this character, overall.
Yes, this Reddit user backs this up by saying that April was funny and that the actress was impressive - which is certainly an unpopular opinion for a fandom that overall finds her to be an arrogant know-it-all with a bad story arc.
6 Not Liking Sookie
Melissa McCarthy portrayed Sookie, Lorelai’s best friend and business partner. She was a talented chef, she cared for her loved ones, and she could provide some comedic relief... for some.
Reddthepirate said this character was overrated and annoying and that they would not appreciate having a business partner who did 'that cutesy naive thing'! Becuase let's face it, Sookie was often clumsy, distracted, incapable of following through, and struggled to deal well with clients.
5 Liking When Rory Lived With Her Grandparents
A notable moment in the story was when Rory and Lorelai were fighting, Rory dropped out of Yale and Rory lived with her grandparents.
According to vesna333, this storyline was good, as the codependent Gilmore girls needed some distance from one another. In fact, during that time, Lorelai even proposed to Luke, and Rory was able to try out an affluent lifestyle and really think about whether she wanted to pursue journalism or not.
4 Agreeing With How Richard & Emily Handled Lorelai’s Pregnancy
As viewers know, Lorelai got pregnant with Rory when she was a teenager, and she did not love how her parents handled the situation. Pinkgirl_13 pointed out that it could have been much worse; they could have kicked her out, sent her away, or even forced her to get an abortion. Was trying to get her settled and taken care of the worst thing?
3 Rory’s Boyfriends
As mentioned, there are so many varying thoughts on the romantic relationships, and here are some interesting ones regarding Rory’s.
_thrillho actually liked Rory’s affair with Dean, saying it was great for character development and created a problem she couldn’t fix by, say, studying. Sassy_Severus_Snape (who is not even a fan of Logan) thought he was too good for Rory. And spookymillie, who is a fan of Jess, thinks Rory needs to move on from all of her old boyfriends.
2 All The Junk Food
Lorelai and Rory were not cooks, so their diet was made up of junk food, take-out orders, and lots of coffee. Those who watch and who also can't cook surely find this relatable and like having an excuse to eat Pop-Tarts while binge-watching. According to carolberry, this aspect of the series wasn’t cute or funny; they did not appreciate how there seemed to be a focus on eating like that and then the characters still being skinny, and apparently healthy, too.
1 The One-Of-A-Kind Phrases
It is time for one more unpopular opinion: some TV shows come with inside jokes that fans are able to spread and show off, but fragileBird90 hates classic quotes from Gilmore Girls like “Copper boom!” and “Oy with the poodles already”. It's actually not that hard to see why this would be annoying, as many of these quotable inside jokes are actually just a little... too quirky.
