Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity, Pikmin 3 Headline Nintendo Treehouse Live Tomorrow

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and Pikmin 3 are set to headline a just-announced Nintendo Treehouse: Live airing tomorrow, October 7. The last Nintendo Treehouse: Live show in July showcased Paper Mario: The Origami King. As Nintendo gears up to release the next Hyrule Warriors title this November, the company revealed gameplay for the title  at the Tokyo Game Show, revealing a playable Impa to the elation of Zelda: Breath of the Wild players.

Hype for Age of Calamity began with the release of a reveal trailer that hinted that Breath of the Wild’s Zelda may be a playable character in the game. Just a day later, a collection of four Amiibo champions from BOTW were announced to be getting a re-release in anticipation of the Hyrule Warriors sequel. Mixing the hack-and-slash elements from Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors franchise with light RPG elements, Hyrule Warriors brings large-scale battles to The Legend of Zelda universe.

Ready to shed more light on Age of Calamity, Nintendo of America announced via Twitter the game would be headlining Nintendo Treehouse: Live tomorrow, October 7. The team’s plan is to show a new stage and gameplay details for the new Hyrule Warriors. In addition, Nintendo will be taking a deep dive into Pikmin 3 Deluxe, which is scheduled to release on October 30.

Hack-and-slash games featuring large-scale battles and massive troop counts seem like they’re a dying breed. The last title in the musou genre to receive any noteworthy attention was Dynasty Warriors 9, which felt rushed and overly ambitious with the implementation of an open world. If Omega Force reverts to the same formula used in Dynasty Warriors 8 and the titles before it, along with that of the first Hyrule Warriors, then Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity should be a marked success. Giant battles plus The Legend of Zelda is sure to equal hours of entertainment.

However, while using a tried and true formula is a surefire way of attracting veteran fans, innovation is also a necessity in today’s industry. There is a such thing as doing too much, too fast (which was a major problem for Dynasty Warriors 9), but experimenting within the confines of what developers already know works is still a grand enough sandbox in which to play. A couple tweaks here and there could see Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity build on the original's solid foundation while planting the seeds for more to come.
