There are many things to love about the hit ABC comedy Modern Family, but there’s no question that it’s the characters that really make the show shine. They all have their quirks and their idiosyncrasies, the things that make audiences identify with and understand them. Mitchell is, of course, one of the best characters on the show, a gay man who has built quite a life for himself and his family.
However, over the course of the show’s several seasons, there were quite a few things that didn’t quite make sense about this delightful main character.
10 Why He Doesn’t Seem To Like Cam Very Much
Despite the fact that Cam and Mitchell have been together for quite a while by the time that the show begins, it sometimes seems like Mitchell doesn’t seem to like Cam very much.
Part of this stems from just how different they are, but it doesn’t help that they seem pretty reluctant to show any signs of affection. It would have been nice to see a few more indications that they actually liked one another and enjoyed spending time together.
9 Why He’s So Uptight About Literally Everything
Anyone who has seen even a few episodes of this show knows that Mitchell is one of the most uptight characters in sitcom history. In this regard, he’s quite a lot like his elder sister Claire.
However, sometimes it gets a bit excessive, and his tendency to get worked up about seemingly insignificant matters is probably a bit difficult for some audiences to understand (let alone to really sympathize with). Sometimes, it’d be nice if Mitchell would just chill out.
8 Why He Was So Reluctant To Tell His Family About Lily
Way back in the pilot of the show, Mitchell proved quite reluctant to tell the rest of his family that he and Cam had decided to adopt a baby.
He says that it’s because he’s afraid that they will judgmental about the whole thing, but one would think that he would know his family well enough by this point to realize that, despite their tendency to be a little judgy at times, that they would have been willing and able to set that aside for the sake of a child.
7 Why He Likes His Mother So Much
It’s no secret that Mitchell has a rather vexed relationship with his father, Jay, and that’s understandable, given that Jay has had some issues accepting his son’s sexuality.
What makes less sense is why Mitchell would be so close to his mother, especially considering the fact that she has pretty consistently shown herself to be a rather selfish person who cares more about her own emotional well-being than that of her family.
6 Why He Hovers Over Lily
Given that Mitchell tends to be a bit high-strung, it’s absolutely in character that he would be a bit compulsive when it comes to childcare. However, there are more than a few times during the course of the series where he really does push it into the realms of the ridiculous.
One would think that at some point he might realize that all of this smothering was likely to end up driving Lily away from him rather than providing her the sense of safety that he thinks it does.
5 Why He Can’t Just Let Cam Be Cam
Cam and Mitchell are a study of opposites. Whereas Mitchell seems quite repressed in terms of his persona, Cam is the type of person who wants to live life to the fullest. However, there are more than a few times when Mitchell seems determined to put a lid on his partner’s (and later husband’s) antics.
It becomes a mystery why Mitchell doesn’t just either let go of some of his own anxieties or at the very least just let Cam live out his life as he wants without being a killjoy all the time.
4 Why Can’t He Get Over His Hangups About Public Displays Of Affection
Among his many other hangups, it turns out that Mitchell really struggles with public displays of affection. A lot of this probably has to do with the fact that he felt emotionally starved as a result of Jay’s emotional unavailability.
But it becomes unreasonable to think that the quite open-minded Mitchell wouldn't allow himself to move on and open himself up to some new experiences and ways of being in the world. He would probably be a whole lot happier.
3 Why The Audience Doesn’t See More Of Him With Phil
Though one gets a pretty firm sense of Mitchell’s relationship with many of the members of his family, particularly his sister Claire, there isn’t quite as much development of his relationship with Phil.
This is really a shame since it would have been nice to see how these two very different kinds of men would respond to each other if they had to put up with each other’s antics for more extended periods of time, given their personalities.
2 Why He Can’t Just Get Over His Hangups With Jay
Now, it has to be admitted that Jay can be a bit prickly. He’s very old-fashioned, and he has certain fixed ideas of what it means to be a man and a leader of the family. As a result, he sometimes doesn’t seem to know how to handle Mitchell.
To be fair to Jay, though, Mitchell doesn’t always make it easy for his father to reach out to him, and he sometimes seems a bit too determined to hold onto some of his past grievances and arguments.
1 Why He Doesn't Confront His Mother About How She's Awful To Claire
It's confusing enough that Mitchell is clearly close to his mother, considering how awful she is to everyone. What's even more perplexing, and frankly confusing, is why he's not willing to stand up to her when it comes to Claire. Time and again, their mother really does try to make her daughter's life miserable.
Considering the fact that Mitchell is close to his sister and clearly holds her in high esteem, it really is confusing why he doesn't tell his mother to knock it off more often (and more vociferously) than he does.
