The relationship between Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore is arguably the most important romance in the TV series The Vampire Diaries, and it is undeniably one of the major focal points of The Vampire Diaries book series that inspired the hit CW TV show.
And although the broad strokes of Elena and Damon's relationship is pretty similar in the TV show and book series, there are also some notable differences. Namely, there are quite a few aspects and elements of the relationship in the books that are omitted from the TV series completely, or that are drastically altered in the small screen adaptation.
10 Damon Followed Her Via Bird
Although the pilot episode alluded to the fact that within the book series, Damon was actually capable of controlling animals like the crow that was acting oddly towards Elena when she was visiting her parents' graves, the series never took things any further than that hint.
However, in the books this is a fairly significant plot point, as it's one of the powers that Damon has but Stefan lacks because, unlike the latter, the former chooses to drink human blood.
9 Damon Kept His Relationship To Stefan A Secret At First
Despite the fact that Damon does initially keep his arrival in town a secret in the TV show, it's certainly not a secret for long. Damon outs himself to Stefan in the first episode, and not long afterwards he meets Elena and introduces himself as the elder Salvatore.
But in the books this is completely different, Elena doesn't find out that Damon is Stefan's brother until a while after they initially meet.
8 But Elena Figured Out Who He Was Anyway
Initially in the book series, both Stefan and Elena are unaware that Damon is in town. But once Stefan opens up about his brother and the problems that they have in their relationship, Elena pretty quickly surmises that the mysterious stranger who keeps popping up is Damon, and that Damon is the one causing all of the vampire trouble in Fell's Church.
Obviously this is a non-issue in the show, as Damon introduces himself to Elena pretty early on in the series.
7 Elena Was Immediately Tempted By Damon
In the TV series, Elena's attraction to Stefan is instantaneous and intense, and it would seem that she didn't feel such a strong connection to Damon right off the bat.
But in the book series it's quite different. She's definitely in love with Stefan in the books as well, but it seems like every time she runs into Damon she gets lost in the connection that they have.
6 Damon Faked Stefan's Death To Woo Elena
In The Vampire Diaries TV show, obviously Damon and Stefan have an enormous love rivalry surrounding Katherine and then Elena, and in the books things pretty much go the same way. Except, the ways in which Damon tries to win over Elena are even more extreme in the books.
At one point Stefan disappears, and Damon actually tells Elena that Stefan has died in the hopes of getting her attention all to himself.
5 There Were Immediate Hints That Damon Was Her Future Husband
While in the TV show Damon and Elena ultimately wound up together, things were up in the air for quite a while, and it seemed like Stefan and Elena had an unbreakable bond.
And although Elena went out of her way to avoid Damon's advances in the books as well, she accidentally invites Damon into her house when she and Bonnie were doing a ritual to see Elena's future husband and Elena said "come in".
4 Damon Manipulated Elena's Dreams
Again, Damon has quite a few powers in the book series that are missing from the TV adaptation of The Vampire Diaries, and one power that he possesses and uses against Elena is the power to manipulate her dreams.
When Damon decides that he wants Elena, he goes all out, and one of the tools that he uses to ensure that she's on his mind is invading her dreams and making her dream about him.
3 Damon Blackmails Elena
The TV version of Damon makes his desire for Elena no secret, but he doesn't go quite as far to manipulate her into some kind of relationship with him as he does in the books.
Instead of a brother named Jeremy, the book version of Elena has a sister named Margaret, and Damon threatens Margaret in order to get Elena to do what he wants her to.
2 Her Blood Bond With Damon Is Stronger Than Her Bond With Stefan
Turning into a vampire is a bit different in the books than it is in the TV show, and as it happens, when Elena became a vampire in the books she died with both Stefan and Damon's blood in her system.
But luckily for Damon, she winds up dying with a bit more of his blood in her than Stefan's, so she develops a sire bond with him instead of with Stefan.
1 Elena May Not Have Been The One For Damon
Although Damon is in love with Elena in both the books and TV show, and despite the fact that Damon has a significant relationship with Bonnie in both the books and the TV show, his connection to Bonnie in the books is much stronger than in the series.
He may be loathe to admit it, but Damon does love Bonnie a lot, and it's quite possible that the book version of his character is more emotionally invested in her than in Elena.
