Die hard fans of the Game Of Thrones saga have had more than one year to delve into the monstrous TV phenomenon's recap of the eight seasons that led to the finale. While there are certainly a lot of questions that have been raised over time, different opinions and theories about this series, there are also details that most people never thought of which deserve equal attention.
Even if these details pertain to secondary characters like Irri, a young Dothraki woman working as Daenerys's handmaiden, they are still worth noting. Let's admit it: the more viewers get a scoop on characters' interesting bits of information they knew nothing about, the easier it is to cope with the yearning for more Game Of Thrones. After all, who doesn't miss watching all the epic stories, episodes, and intense-filled dramas of the most watched HBO TV show ever?
10 She Was Given To Daenerys As A Handmaiden After Marriage To Drogo
Irri belongs to the Dothraki lineage and shows up on the series as a gift from Drogo, right after Daenerys marries him. Being a Dothraki, she is part of a race of nomadic horse-mounted warriors that are located in Essos, a continent mapped on the east side of Westeros. The new husband, Drogo, has a list of women on his Khalasar and sends Irri to be close to Daenerys as her handmaiden in order to help her learn the Dothraki language and traditions.
9 Irri Is One Of Three Handmaidens But She Is The Most Loyal One
While she was only a handmaiden to the self-proclaimed Queen of Westeros, she was unarguably the one who stood by Khaleesi's side all through her journey until her terrible death. Unlike with Jhiqui and Doreah, two other handmaidens who were gifted to Daenerys at the same time, Irri is the only one who keeps her loyalty. Fans get to understand this because, in her final scene, Irri ends up being smothered by Doreah in an act of betrayal. Doreah is, later on, accused of conspiring against both Daenerys and her dragons and is sentenced to death.
8 She Has Sweet Maternal Instincts
Irri is the person who finds out that Daenerys is pregnant with Drogo's child. Viewers get to see this as Irri touches her Queen's breasts and predicts that she is going to become a mother soon. This discovery made Irri want to tender Khaleesi more than usual and she goes as far as arranging a special dinner to celebrate this omen.
At the celebration, Irri, then, demands that Daenerys should be served something other than horseflesh for the meal and looks very festive about the arrival of the soon-to-be baby.
7 Irri Is The Best Caretaker
While keeping an almost innocent and positive attitude throughout her tribe's challenges - and especially towards her new Queen - Irri has managed to be the best caretaker Daenerys could ever find. Not only is her honest and loyal vibe present every time she shows up, but she's also tenders to everyone's needs around her. Irri is the one who helps Doreah after Viserys of the House Targaryen beats her. Also, she is a part of a decisive moment in the Game Of Thrones story as she helps with Drogo's wounds after he is left catatonic.
6 Kings And Knights Of Westeros Mean Nothing To Her
Irri is completely devoted to the Dothraki cause and to the wife of Khal Drogo, Daenerys. She acknowledges that her Queen deserves to conquer Westeros and is loyal to her but she clearly despises her mission. Ultimately, she seems to be afraid that Daenerys might end up forgetting that she is a Khaleesi and that's why she reacts negatively when Doreah says that Daenerys would look like a real princess in Xaro’s dress. At this moment, Irri objects to the "princess" title, correcting Doreah by reminding her that Daenerys is a Khaleesi. As a true Dothraki, Irri worships the Earth and is part of a tribute of conquerors who live on horseback and sleep in nature. Fancy kingdoms are not appealing to this character.
5 Daenerys Loved And Tried To Protect Her Too
During season 2, Daenerys finds out that some of her Khalasar have been killed and this prompts her to run to her chamber to look out for her dragons and her handmaidens. When she gets there, she discovers Irri strangled to death and is left terrified for both missing her "children" and for having been unable to protect her closest friend. In this scene, fans can truly empathize with Daenerys and realize how much Irri meant to her. Eventually, Khaleesi is able to avenge Irri's death but she feels completely heartbroken.
4 This Character Is Played By Actress Amrita Acharia
Most people may not know this but Irri is played by the talented Amrita Acharia, a beautiful woman of Ukrainian and Nepalese descent. Acharia has worked on a few screen roles but being a part of the Game Of Thrones cast might have been her most memorable work yet. Initially, she appeared as a guest star in the first season but, later on, Acharia was confirmed for season two as well. In total, her character appears in 13 episodes, the first one being "The Kingsroad" and the last one "The Old Gods and the New".
3 Irri Lives For A Longer Period In The Books
Even though she was assassinated in the middle of season 2, after Daenerys's dragons were stolen, Irri's life is much longer in the novel that gave rise to this TV adaptation. In the books, she makes it to the end of the fifth novel. On paper, she survives up until Daenerys is ruling in Meereen. But unlike other members of the cast, Amrita Acharia felt that this decision of killing her character early on was reasonable and she seemed happy about it. And speaking of the Game of Thrones novel, its author George R. R. Martin is currently writing a new Game Of Thrones saga while taking advantage of the self-isolation period due to the pandemic.
2 Bio Facts Revealed In The Novel
According to the books, Irri was enslaved by Khal Drogo when she was very young. She was born in 283 AC near the Dothraki Sea and she is about the same age as Daenerys Targaryen. Irri has skin the color of copper, with black hair and "almond-shaped eyes." While in the TV series viewers see Irri and Daenerys relationship become a true friendship, in the novel Irri's role was fundamentally to teach Khaleesi how to ride.
As these characters' bond strengthens on TV, the actress who plays Irri considers that this causes Irri to drift further away from her Dothraki's identity. Following a completely unconventional new Queen's footsteps would be challenging for anyone and that's no different for this handmaiden. Another trivia about Irri is that both she and Jhiqui develop a crush on Rakharo, even though this potential romantic trio is not explored on TV.
1 "It Is Known"
One of this character's most memorable quotes, which was repeated several times to Queen Khaleesi, is "It is known." A fan theory suggests that this quote is rather relevant in the context of the story because it contrasts one of the main differences between Daenerys and Jon Snow. How? “It is known” is the ideal counterpart to Jon's most meaningful quote ever said to him “you know nothing, Jon Snow”. Figuratively speaking, while Jon spends the majority of his time trying to learn new cultures and understand different people, while Daenerys isn't so prone to this.
