Character creation in RPGs can be a mixed bag, but Immortals Fenyx Rising may have found the perfect balance between too much and not enough. Some games have cut character creation entirely, like Breath of The Wild, or they offer a creator so complex it can take hours to finish, like Skyrim or Dragon Age Inquisition. However, Immortals Fenyx Rising takes the aspects of a complex creator and boils them down to quick choices, giving players the ability to customize a unique Fenyx without the struggle that comes from face-shape toggles and a frustrating lack of skin tones or hairstyles.
Immortals Fenyx Rising has taken an approach different from options that are determined by gender selection, like in the Demon's Souls remake's new character creator. Whereas customization in other games can be greatly limited by players' selection of a character's gender, Immortals Fenyx Rising has no gender-locked choices. Players select a Body to get started. One is more masculine, and one is more feminine, but neither determine the player's actual pronouns in the game. Players have access to all hairstyles, facial hair and face decorations, regardless of their Body choice.
The character creator also offers players some exciting colors for hair, skin and eyes. Out of the 10 skin tones available, players have the choice of red, green or blue, as well as an array of natural tones. Hair also has a fun selection within the 10 colors offered, giving players the selection of blue, green, pink and white, as well as blond, brown and black. These colors aren't muted, either, as Immortals Fenyx Rising emulates the beautiful color saturation of Breath of the Wild, among other similarities between the two games. The days of grey and brown seem to be a thing of the past for Ubisoft in this new game, embracing a vibrant style that veers away from RPGs of the past.
Another aspect of the character creator that fans will find refreshing is the ethnic diversity within the options. Unlike other games that rarely have many darker skin tones, Immortals Fenyx Rising offers a solid range from dark to light. The dark skin tones go down to a rich brown that looks fantastic once players launch into the story for Immortals Fenyx Rising, not muting the character's skin or looking grey. The game also offers a selection of hairstyles that are more inclusive, with 12 styles that range from short to long and several with locs. This inclusive variety gives most players the potential to create a Fenyx they can personally relate to.
The one downside to the creator that players may feel frustrated with is voice range selection. There are two options, a higher and a lower pitch, that players can select from. Unfortunately, these two ranges are how the player's pronouns are determined during gameplay. In the future, Immortals Fenyx Rising DLC could benefit from potentially adding a third, non-binary option to compliment the non-gendered character creator. Despite that issue, Immortals Fenyx Rising offers a solid, simple character creator that allows players ample choices without taking hours to get through. This easy and effective customization gives players a unique character for their adventure in a personalized odyssey to save the gods.
Immortals Fenyx Rising is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, Stadia, and PC.
