Zack Snyder's Justice League Could Be Coming To DC Comics, Too

Zack Snyder's Justice League cut is still on track for a mid-2021 release, as the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice filmmaker's vision for his own cut of the 2017 film will be airing on HBO Max. Before it hits the small screen, longtime Batman comic book writer Scott Snyder (no relation), revealed that he was asked to adapt the upcoming director's cut to the page.

Earlier this year, Zack Snyder revealed that his vision of Justice League would be coming out on HBO Max. The announcement came after years of calls for the "Snyder Cut" to be released, following the lukewarm reception of the original film that Joss Whedon took over following a tragedy in Zack Snyder's family. The new cut of the film will reportedly cost $70 million to complete and will feature characters that did not initially appear in Whedon's cut, such as Jared Leto's Joker, Zheng Kai's Ryan Choi, and Ray Porter's Darkseid.

Scott Snyder, who's iconic run on Batman served as inspiration for Zack Snyder's take on the character, was interviewed at this week's CCXP Worlds to promote his current American Vampire 1976 run. According to Omelete.com, Scott Snyder revealed that he was approached to help with a comic book adaptation of Zack Snyder's Justice League to help build on the upcoming four-part film's release.

Here's a translation of his quotes from the interview. Snyder reportedly declined the opportunity since he's working on a bunch of projects and joked that he couldn't deal with being confused for Zack Snyder.

Scott Snyder stated that he was asked by DC to "help with the comic adaptation and expansion of the [Justice League Snyder Cut] mythology that he is doing on [HBO Max]." The comic book Snyder, however, said that he did not accept the job because "I had a lot of jobs ahead of me and I can't deal with people confusing us anymore."

If true, it's a shame Snyder couldn't help flesh out Zack Snyder's upcoming cut in comic book form. It's unclear what DC's plans are with Zack Snyder's Justice League beyond its release. Continuing it in comic form would be a great way to keep the story going while not interfering with DC's future film plans. Regardless, Scott Snyder would have been a perfect fit for the universe's expansion, as he's one of the most knowledgeable Batman writers ever. He's done so much to expand DC's current continuity via his runs on Batman, Justice League, and his Death Metal series with Greg Capullo.

It will be fascinating to see if Zack Snyder's Justice League is ever adapted in comic form. If no sequels are ever made, comic books would provide a great space to further expand his Justice League universe. Time will tell if those discussions were just an idea, or if they will ever come to fruition.
