The COVID-19 pandemic forced numerous movies to postpone their release dates, including several horror movies that are now set to premiere in January 2021. Whether they are major blockbusters, streaming exclusives, or VOD features, the new year will usher in a whole new set of terrifying tales. Here's every horror movie set to release in January 2021 and where they can be found.
Since March 2020, directors and production companies have sought to alleviate the strain that the pandemic has had on movie release schedules. Even major streaming services have picked up more original content and exclusives than normal. Shudder kept horror movies alive with some of the greatest titles to hit the market in years. When their pandemic inspired Zoom found footage movie, Host, released in July 2020, it was immediately remarked as one of the most timely movies of the year as well as 2020's best horror release. The streaming service did not stop there. They went on to become the home of impeccable folk horror flicks such as Joko Anwar's Impetigore and horror comedies that reinvented the classic storytelling format like Josh Ruben's Scare Me.
While major blockbusters such as The Invisible Man and The Hunt went to VOD, others continued to be postponed in hopes of securing a theatrical release. When restrictions started to alleviate, Blumhouse Productions' Freaky was able to enjoy a short run at select theaters in November 2020, and was followed by a VOD release in two weeks later. The COVID-19 pandemic couldn't put every horror movie on hold, but highly anticipated releases such as Halloween Kills, The Forever Purge, Candyman, and A Quiet Place Part II changed their dates for 2021. Now that the new year is rapidly approaching, there are so many new movies to look forward to. Without further ado, here's every movie set to release in January 2021.
On January 8, 2021, The Devil's Light anticipates a theatrical release in the United States. It is important to note that the second-wave of the COVID-19 pandemic may change the status of each of these movies at a whim. As of this writing, Daniel Stamm's paranormal horror flick will premiere on January 8th in theaters. It tells the story of a nun who must confront a demonic force that has unsettling ties to her past. While Blumhouse's The Conjuring franchise is put on pause until The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It releases during the summer, fans of the Ed and Lorraine Warren inspired movies can enjoy Stamm's haunting tale of a demonic entity.
Shudder constantly gains new titles, including their upcoming exclusive Hunted, which is set to premiere on January 14, 2021. As with most of Shudder's original movies, it will be available on a Thursday. While they do not have any other movies set to release before Hunted, it's likely that they are keeping some of their recently-acquired projects under wraps until the new year officially begins; Shudder traditionally releases one new movie a week. Hunted is one of the most anticipated releases for January 2021, as it is an adaptation of the "Little Red Riding Hood" fairytale. While Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm - also known as the Brothers Grimm - created a kid-friendly version of Charles Perrault's 17th century story, Hunted takes most of its inspiration from the true original tale. It follows Eve (Lucie Debay) as she is pursued by two men in a forest filled with wild wolves and faces off with misogynistic horrors.
Following Hunted, Shudder will release Psycho Goreman on January 22, 2021. It is another highly anticipated movie by Steven Kostanski, who is primarily known for his special effects work on movies such as IT: Chapter One, Suicide Squad, and Silent Hill: Revelation. He has been part of major franchises including Resident Evil and Leprechaun. Kostanski's directorial credits include the upcoming Day Of The Dead television series as well as The Void.
Psycho Goreman is both written and directed by Kostanski. It tells the story of a monster who seeks to destroy the universe. When two siblings, Mimi and Luke, discover the power to control the beast, they manipulate him into doing whatever they want. Psycho Goreman resembles the relationship between Phoebe and Frankenstein's Monster in Monster Squad, but with the added touch of an unrelentingly hilarious dynamic. When Mimi becomes the commander of the universe's biggest threat, the young girl takes on much more than expected, especially when it comes to disguising Psycho Goreman, whom she calls "PG."
When an Iranian couple stop in a hotel for lodging, they become inexplicably trapped within its walls. The building starts to play on their biggest fears and even issues they've encountered in their relationship. The Night will premiere through VOD on January 29, 2021. It features a similar storyline to Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's iconic novel, The Shining, as its plot also pertains to a couple whose relationship is manipulated by the horrors of a hotel. Hotels have become a popular setting since the release of the 1980 movie. One of Shudder's more recent releases, Lingering, was inspired by The Shining, but ultimately failed to deliver. Hopefully, The Night will impress where other hotel-based horror movies haven't managed to hit the mark.
While some movies have concrete release dates as well as formats under which they will premiere, others do not. This includes the indie horror movies Vampire In Oakland (January 5, 2021), Dante's Hell (January 9, 2021), and Midnight Screening (January 15, 2021). It's likely that they have yet to secure a distributor, but anticipate releasing on their set dates or they may not have yet announced which service will be their home. As of this writing, Shudder, Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix have yet to tie themselves to any of these projects. With the similarities between Vampires Vs. The Bronx and Vampire In Oakland, it is unlikely that they will share Netflix. Adaptations of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy rarely do well, which may be the reasoning behind Dante's Hell's unknown distributor. The last on the list, Midnight Screening, is the epitome of a classic indie horror movie, which makes it entirely plausible that it will release on Shudder, as the service is made by and for horror fans of all sub-genres.
