Robin Gets (A Little) Revenge For The Murder of Alfred

Warning: may contain mild spoilers for Robin #1

DC Comics has just released a preview for its new Robin series, which will see Damian Wayne, the wayward son of Batman, getting some slight revenge in the first issue for the murder of Alfred, the Bat Family's late butler and surrogate father figure. After leaving his official role as Robin behind, Damian has abandoned Batman and Gotham entirely, believing that his true path lies in one day taking over the League of Assassins and Shadows from his grandfather Ra's Al Ghul. Additionally, the emergence of the rogue League of Lazarus and their Lazarus Tournament provides the opportunity for Robin to prove himself in this upcoming series, and it looks as though one of his fights will provide him the opportunity to exact at least a little revenge for Alfred's death.

DC Comics' Robin will be coming from writer Joshua Williamson with art by Gleb Melnikov. A two-part prelude has already been released in Batman #106 and Detective Comics #1034, seeing Damian learning about the Lazarus Tournament from his mother. Additionally, the prelude also reveals that he'll soon be fighting none other than the son of Green Arrow Connor Hawke (who's been missing in the current DC continuity for years).

Now, a new preview for Robin #1, which will be coming in late April, sees the former Boy Wonder in what looks to be one of his first fights in the Lazarus Tournament. His opponent is not an insignificant one as it's none other than King Snake, the father of Bane. As such, Damian's brutal takedown of his foe seen in the preview pages provide Damian with some minimal revenge, as it was Bane who murdered Alfred right before Robin's eyes. Here's the preview pages of their fight and the synopsis for the issue from DC Comics:

  • ROBIN #1
  • (W) Joshua Williamson
  • (A/CA) Gleb Melnikov
  • After learning of the deadly League of Lazarus tournament, Damian Wayne has a new mission: to win the tournament and prove he is the greatest fighter in the DC Universe! But first he must find the secret island where the tournament is being held!

In DC Comics' past, King Snake was a foe of Batman as well as Tim Drake's Robin, and the blind martial artist is typically quite formidable, having honed all of his other senses to help him fight (not unlike Marvel's Daredevil). However, he's apparently no match for Damian Wayne, who quickly beats the father of Bane into submission, getting the Son of the Bat one step closer to winning the Lazarus Tournament. Beyond just winning his first bout, this victory can be looked at as an act of revenge from Robin, seeing as how King Snake is the reason for Bane's entire existence. Not only is he Bane's father, but Bane was forced to serve his father's life sentence in prison in Santa Prisca, which is what turned him into such a brutal and merciless villain once he escaped in the current era of DC Comics.

While Damian's revenge isn't overtly stated in the preview pages, it's still a satisfying nod to the past and the pain the Batman's son is still carrying. Alfred's murder is the whole reason why Damian quit as Robin and why he and his father are estranged in the first place. Furthermore, it looks as though Damian will more than likely continue to carry that pain and anger as this new Robin series continues from DC Comics, using it to unleash brutal blows on his opponents in future issues.
