Biomutant Runs Better On Xbox Series X Than PS5, Gameplay Reveals

Gameplay footage for THQ’s Biomutant on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X has just recently been released, and it seems that the latter has a slight advantage in terms of animation and graphical performance. The curtain is now being slowly pulled back on this upcoming action RPG ahead of its launch next week, following a long drought of Biomutant information that spanned a long and tumultuous development cycle.

First announced way back in 2017, Biomutant puts players in the role of a fully customizable anthropomorphic hero as they embark on a quest to save the world from a poisonous oil that threatens the ancient Tree Of Life. Throughout the past two months, developer THQ Nordic has unveiled one intriguing piece of gameplay footage after another, showing off the game’s colorful world, sprawling storyline, and fluid combat that has been compared to Rocksteady’s excellent Batman: Arkham series and The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. Now, fans can see for themselves which console might be the better choice to play Biomutant on, at least when it comes to seeing that colorful world in its full 4K glory.

Following a brief press conference, THQ Nordic posted two Youtube videos earlier today that showed off how Biomutant will perform on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when the game becomes available for those two systems. While the comparison between the two is very close, it seems the Xbox version wins out with more fluid animation and a slightly further draw distance. Interestingly enough, the PS5 video notes that native 4K upscaling has been disabled due to “stability and performance-related reasons," and that this version of the game will run on 1080p at 60fps upscaled to 4k as opposed to the Xbox Series X's native 4K. Check out the two videos below:

This is hardly the first time a game’s performance has been compared between the PS5 and Xbox Series X, as recent titles like Resident Evil Village and Cyberpunk 2077 have been sized up between the different platforms. These comparisons often give the edge to the Xbox Series X when it comes to graphical prowess, but some have noted that the PS5 provides a higher framerate when it comes to certain games. This hasn’t stopped the PS5 from taking the lead from the Series X when both consoles launched last November, with the former becoming one of the highest selling consoles of all time despite an ongoing shortage of both systems.

It seems that Xbox has taken another win when it comes to Biomutant’s performance on the Series X, but it’s worth noting how the PS5 version won’t be a full native 4K experience - as well as the performance issues THQ cited as the reasons for native upscaling being disabled on Sony’s newest console. Even more puzzling, native upscaling won’t be patched into a later update. In any case, players will finally be able to step into the bright and colorful universe of Biomutant when the game finally launches on May 25.
