Loki Show Explores Who He Is Outside Of His Relationship With Thor

Tom Hiddleston reveals that his upcoming MCU series Loki will explore its titular character outside of his relationship with Thor. The God of Mischief has long been defined by his relationship to his brother, debuting in the first Thor film before breaking bad in The Avengers. Loki's journey has been a rough one, but the road to redemption was clear. Despite being unable to stop himself from playing into his mischievous name, against all odds, Loki proved himself to be a valuable, albeit unreliable, ally to his brother.

Despite their past troubles, Thor and Loki had finally reached something resembling peace after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. That peace was interrupted when Loki was brutally killed by Thanos during the opening events of Avengers: Infinity War, but it wasn't the end of the God of Mischief's journey in the MCU. In Avengers: Endgame, Loki escapes with the Tesseract into timelines unknown and that's where the series will pick up with his journey.

That journey will go beyond who Loki was in the MCU up until this point, exploring Hiddleston's character outside the dynamic he had built with his brother. The actor revealed as much in a new profile from EW, saying the Loki series will explore the God of Mischief "independent" of his relationship with Thor. Hiddleston says that this is what Marvel president Kevin Feige set out to do from the beginning, removing Loki from the context of what Hiddleston dubs the "Odinson saga."

One of the things Kevin Feige led on was, 'I think we should find a way of exploring the parts of Loki that are independent of his relationship with Thor,' or see him in a duality or in relationship with others, which I thought was very exciting. So the Odinson saga, that trilogy of films, still has its integrity, and we don't have to reopen it and retell it.

Loki is clearly a reset of sorts for the character because of the Time Heist in Endgame. The Avengers going back to the aftermath of the Battle of New York will essentially erase all personal development Loki made in the MCU after The Avengers. While some fans may be sad to see the Loki they knew and loved go, it may ultimately be what's best for the character.

Allowing Loki to grow outside of his dynamic with Thor will give the character the opportunity to prove himself on his own. Whether or not he has a true capacity for good remains to be seen and that question will likely play into his relationship with the Time Variance Authority, but it's safe to say Loki will shine a new light on the beloved character. This will give Hiddleston a chance to rewrite the character in a way that many actors don't get to do with roles they've had for so long and makes the upcoming Disney+ series all the more exciting.
