Warning! Spoilers ahead for Robin #2
In the latest issue of DC Comics' new Robin series, Damian Wayne has been unleashed to do what he never could working alongside his father Batman: go on a massive killing spree. Recently, Batman and Robin have been estranged as father and son, resulting in Damian leaving Gotham to forge his own path. Now, this new series has seen Damian learning about the League of Lazarus, a new sect that holds a deadly tournament of the most formidable fighters in the DC Universe. Given the unique nature of the contest, Damian enters the tournament both to investigate and also to prove himself. And he's also just learned that he doesn't have to hold back either.
In Robin #2, from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Gleb Melnikov, Damian has been resurrected by the power of Lazarus Island after having his heart ripped out in the first issue by the fighter known as Flatline. Apparently, every contender in the tournament is given three lives before they die permanently, which Robin would have known earlier had he not tried to take on anyone and everyone as soon as he set foot on the island.
Robin gets the rundown on how the contest works from Deathstroke's daughter Ravager, who has apparently decided to mentor the Son of Batman. With the reward being immortality thanks to the powers of the Lazarus pit, every fighter seems pretty determined to win the contest. However, they've never faced a Damian Wayne who's just learned that he can kill without feeling any sort of guilt, seeing as how they'll just be resurrected the first two times. As a result, Robin goes on a massive killing spree, unleashing his skills and most lethal attacks that Batman would never condone under normal circumstances (though he'd probably be against Robin's actions all the same just based on principle).
While Damian may have been the first to lose his first life, he's clearly leveled the playing field quite a bit after violently letting loose on his fellow fighters. That being said, Ravager still lets him know that he'll be facing some fierce competition with foes such as Respawn, XXL, Flatline, and Black Swan. Not only that, but it's also been revealed that Damian will be going toe-to-toe with Connor Hawke, the secret son of Green Arrow. As a result, it's doubtful that Robin will be able to take them on as easily as he had his previous victims.
In any case, Robin has already had some significant ups and down in these first two issues, and his new mission seems primed to test him in all sorts of ways. Most likely, Damian is going to have to answer the question of what kind of person he wants to be for the rest of his life. Does he want to take the darker path and be a lethal rogue, or will he decide to go back to being a hero with a code, rejoining his father Batman? Time will tell as Robin continues from DC Comics.
