Notorious Jackass star, Steve-O, says that he prepared for the upcoming movie, Jackass 4, by being paralyzed from the waist down. The latest installment in the hugely popular stupid stunt franchise has been a long time coming, with Jackass 3 having arrived over a decade ago. Back then, things were much different for the Jackass crew than they currently are, but one thing that consistently doesn’t seem to pose a problem for the guys is aging.
From its earliest stages as an MTV series in the early 2000s, Jackass broke new ground. Known for its ability to shock, disgust and prompt fits of incredulous laughter, the TV program quickly evolved into a series of feature films, with each installment seeking to outdo the previous one. Audiences couldn’t get enough, but while the Jackass crew was always ready to risk life and limb for fun or a laugh, things were becoming increasingly severe for some of its members. The death of Ryan Dunn in 2011 after a car accident marked a turning point in the Jackass era, particularly for best friend, Bam Margera. In the years since Dunn’s death, Margera has struggled with substance abuse and depression, to the point where he was cut from Jackass 4 because he could not stay sober throughout the production.
No stranger to his own past challenges with regard to drugs and alcohol, Steve-O has been fit and sober for 13 years now. One might think that the Jackass star’s sobriety would result in playing things a little safer, but that definitely isn’t the case. In a new video from the Steveo official YouTube channel, the 46-year-old stuntman reveals a lengthy list of ways in which he’s preparing himself and fans for the arrival of Jackass 4. One particularly cringeworthy stunt involved getting a doctor to dress as a clown and inject a four inch needle into Steve-O’s spine, so that he would be paralyzed from the waist down:
It doesn’t seem like Steve-O ever tires of coming up with new ways to make people wince, and this ability is arguably one of the biggest reasons why Jackass is still successful today. The fact that he’s coming up with stunts like this on his own suggests that what’s going to be included in Jackass 4 might be even more ridiculous, and that’s a hugely attractive prospect for fans of the franchise. Johnny Knoxville has previously stated that the current ages of the Jackass crew has made the stunts even funnier, and this very well could be the case.
But while Steve-O intentionally has had himself paralyzed in the lead up to Jackass 4, it’s still hard to say how the new film will be received. If the past is any indication, then Steve-O and the other Jackass guys have a big hit on their hands. However, it has been a long time since anyone went to the theater to see a Jackass movie, and as such, there’s always the risk that what used to keep audiences laughing and grossed out might not be such a draw today. Time will tell how this latest entry fares, but a decade later or not, it will be hard not to watch as Jackass makes its return.
