Former DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson is now blocking her Twitter account from being viewed by anyone other than her followers due to overwhelming backlash for her support of the upcoming Joker movie. One of the projects that has quickly moved into production in the months since producer Walter Hamada took over DC Films is Todd Phillips' Joker origin movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, the future Clown Prince of Crime.
Prior to this year, though, Nelson played a significant part in shepherding development of all DC properties under Warner Bros. - including those in the interactive medium - going back almost a decade. But then, earlier this year, she took a leave of absence from DC Entertainment to focus on family-related matters. Instead of returning this summer, though, Nelson ultimately decided to leave the studio altogether. She's remained mum on all matters relating to DC ever since her departure this past June... until now. The first photos of Phoenix's Joker in full costume (and clown makeup) have been cropping up online over the past few days, and Nelson broke her silence on all things DC by expressing enthusiasm for the new movie.

In a now protected tweet, she said in response to Phoenix's Joker reveal: "LOVE IT! Great story, great actor, specific and string vision from talented director. What DC should have been doing since Nolan. Even if die hard fans struggle with his vision." Several people took her comments as slighting Zack Snyder's vision for the DCEU, but that wasn't the case. In fact, she responded to one of those responses by saying she holds Snyder in the same breadth as Nolan: "I happen to count Zack Snyder among those things, if you are insinuating otherwise. No snake here." But the overwhelming backlash to her Joker comments has resulted in her blocking her Twitter account from non-confirmed followers.
In addition to a legion of fans taking her initial comment in the wrong way, as her possibly insinuating that Snyder's vision for the DCEU derailed the DC franchise, several people also piled on Nelson after her second comment, because they believed she was defending Snyder after the fact. Given everything that happened with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as the troubled production surrounding the Justice League movie, people are calling out Nelson online for not supporting the filmmaker's vision all along. It wouldn't be the first time that a WB executive has come under fire for what happened to Snyder, but personally attacking Nelson (who doesn't even work for DC or WB anymore) is wrong, plain and simple.
Nelson isn't the first person to block and/or leave social media following online backlash. A few months ago, it was reported that Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Kelly Marie Tran erased her Instagram account due to being bullied, and something similar happened to Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown, who ended up closing her Twitter account. Then, just last month, Ruby Rose left Twitter as a result of trolls bullying her online after she was cast as Batwoman for this year's Arrowverse crossover. Suffice to say, it doesn't seem like this trend will stop anytime soon, but it should at least try to be prevented by the social media companies.
