American Gods Season 2 NYCC Trailer & Poster: Get Ready for War

Starz dropped the trailer for the upcoming season 2 of American Gods at New York Comic Con today. The show's cast, along with novel author Neil Gaiman appeared to promote the second season of the break-out hit. Fans in the crowd got the first look at what lies ahead, following last season's crucial reveals.

Season 1 ended with Gods colliding and conspiring. Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) and Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) arrived at the Easter celebration hosted by the Goddess Ostara (Kristin Chenoweth) in an attempt to form an alliance with her. Meanwhile, an undead and further decaying Laura (Emily Browning) entered separately, in an attempt to be resurrected. As it's revealed that Mr. Wednesday was responsible for Laura's death and Shadow's prison sentence, the New Gods crash the party. Mr. Wednesday ties the season back to its opening scene by revealing himself to be the Norse God Odin. Ostara, now swayed by his plans to put the Old Gods back in power, casts a drought on America, and Laura and Shadow reunite, now fully realizing the weight of the divine intention they've been co-opted under.

Starz's first trailer for American Gods season 2 shows Shadow back on the road with Mr. Wednesday and a reluctant-looking Laura. Still drawing his mortal instrument into his apparently growing alliance of Old Gods, Mr Wednesday beckons: "Won't you join us Shadow?"  Check out the full trailer and the show's NYCC poster, below:

Mr. Wednesday's legion now appears to include Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), Czernobog (Peter Stormare), and Okoye (Conphidance), whose stories of rise and decline were woven into Season 1. As the adversarial leader of the New Gods, Mr. World (Crispin Glover) teases the celestial clash to come, saying "The storm is coming." Although Shadow and Laura's romance appears to be rekindling, there's no clarification of her living status. Rather, her warnings against Mr. Wednesday indicate that she's in more danger than anything else.

"You're in the fairytale now aren't ya" - Mad Sweeney's matter-of-fact dig at Shadow, indicates that this season will be far more fantastical. Season 1 revolved around Shadow's transition from a cynical, secular, often one-dimensional man, to one who becomes endowed with a purpose and rewarded with the secrets of the universe in exchange for his open mind and faith in a higher power. Now apparently part of the godly entourage, Laura, instead of being typecast as a modern-day Jezebel, appears to be perfectly placed as the reasonably skeptical counterpoint in Shadow's uncertainty. The series continues to present ideas about questioning higher powers, and what the desire for power motivates everyone, including Gods, to do.

There may yet be significant stylistic changes given the departure of three showrunners, which resulted in the show going on hiatus for six weeks. However the first glance indicates that there's definitely a phenomenal story in works, with plentiful opportunities for the stellar American Gods cast to deliver even more jaw-dropping moments in season 2.
