Freddy Krueger Actor Game For One More Nightmare on Elm Street Movie

A Nightmare On Elm Street star Robert Englund hasn’t completely ruled out a return as Freddy Krueger. Freddy was the creation of writer/director Wes Craven, with the character being a child killer who got away with his hideous crimes on a technicality, leading to vengeful parents taking their revenge by burning him alive. He returned in the dreams of their children to seek his revenge, and the character gradually morphed from the shadowy dream stalker of the original to a wisecracking comedian across various sequels.

Englund played Freddy from 1984’s A Nightmare On Elm Street all the way to 2003’s Freddy Vs Jason. In addition to the eight movies, he also played the character in two seasons of the TV show Freddy’s Nightmares and across numerous cameos in other shows and music videos. Englund hung up the hat and razor glove when planned sequel Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash failed to materialize, and Jackie Earle Haley took on the character for the critically reviled remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street.

For years Englund has stated he would never return as Freddy Krueger, but he delighted fans recently by announcing a guest appearance as the character on sitcom The Goldbergs. Fans would love to see him return in another A Nightmare On Elm Street movie, and in a new interview with Access he doesn’t rule out the possibility.

I think they want to reboot the franchise, but they’re gonna need a new actor. They gonna need a new actor to play Freddy because they’re gonna have to do 8 of them, you know. I might have one left in me.

The question of a Freddy Krueger return was put to the actor following the recent success of Halloween, which has brought back Michael Myers after nearly a decade away. In contrast to other horror icons like Michael or Jason Voorhees - who have been played by multiple performers across their respective franchises – the reason fans love Freddy is down to Englund’s performance. While Earle Haley is a great actor, he wasn’t able to leave nearly as much of an impression on the character - although his performance was far from the biggest issue with 2010's A Nightmare On Elm Street.

The success of Halloween will lead to renewed interest in resurrecting other horror franchises, and given the timing of Freddy’s cameo in The Goldbergs, naturally, there will be speculation about A Nightmare On Elm Street reboot. Englund has previously ruled out a return due to his age - he’s currently 71 - and the physically taxing nature of the part. That said, with Englund hinting he may actually have one more Freddy Krueger performance left in him, perhaps he could be convinced to don the fedora one last time.
