Homecoming Trailer: Amazon Puts Julia Roberts In A Mysterious Psychological Thriller

The newest trailer for Amazon’s Homecoming finds a paranoid Julia Roberts in the midst of a psychological mystery. That mystery will, presumably, only get weirder as the series moves on, thanks in large part to the involvement of director Sam Esmail. The creator of USA’s Mr. Robot knows a thing or two about creating the necessary twists and turns of a successful paranoid thriller, and it looks as though his outing with the Academy Award winner will venture even further down that particular path.

Adapted from the podcast of the same name from Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, Homecoming is another example of just how much television there is out there, and how these projects have begun pulling from some some inspired, but unexpected sources. Unlike Amazon’s Lore, which is also adapted from a podcast, Homecoming follows a more traditional narrative path (well, as traditional as you get from a director like Esmail), as it focuses on caseworker Heidi Bergman's (Roberts) involvement in a program meant to help soldiers transition back into civilian life. As you may have already guessed, things don’t go according to plan.

Though Homecoming would likely be a major draw for Amazon based on Roberts’ name alone, the series also features Bobby Cannavale, Shea Whigham, Jeremy Allen White, Alex Karpovsky, Dermott Mulroney, and Sissy Spacek, who is jumping streaming services after her memorable run in Hulu’s own psychological thriller, Castle Rock. Check out the trailer below:

The new trailer offers the best look yet at the mysterious thriller, and though it doesn’t offer too many details as to what is going on, it excels at building a kind of tension that should get viewers excited to watch. It also offers the best look yet at some of Esmail’s unconventional techniques, like the altered aspect ratio of Roberts’ encounter with Whigham — which almost looks like it was shot on an iPhone being held upright. What effect that will have on the series’ overall presentation and reception is just one of several questions waiting to be answered when Homecoming premieres in early November.

The series looks as though it will pack the necessary one-two punch to get viewers’ attention. With its A-list star and inventive director behind the camera, Homecoming stands to be a fascinating binge for Amazon subscribers.
