A new rumor suggests that the title of Avengers 4 is actually Avengers: Annihilation. While the title is lifted from the comics, it's something of a departure from the original arc; is this rumor really likely to be true?
Marvel's decision to hold back on announcing the title of Avengers 4 has generated intense debate among fans. What could it be, and why do Marvel consider it to be something of a spoiler? Countless different possibilities have been raised and discarded, and the most popular idea so far remains Avengers: Endgame - even though the Russos insisted the film title isn't mentioned in Avengers: Infinity War. Curiously, Kevin Feige has suggested the intensity of the debate has "sort of backfired" for Marvel in that he fears there's no way Marvel can possibly live up to the hype.

The latest rumor originates with Jeremy Conrad, who claims a reliable source has revealed the title to him. According to Conrad, the movie will be called Avengers: Annihilation. This idea is derived from a classic comic book story from 2006, written by Keith Giffen. While the plot of Avengers 4 isn't expected to be anything like the Annihilation arc, Conrad is right to point out that the MCU plays fast and loose with its comic book inspirations. After all, in the comics, Avengers: Age of Ultron was a time-travel story.
But this particular rumor doesn't seem particularly credible. Conrad himself has a mixed reputation in terms of the accuracy of his "scoops," and, as a result, this should be taken with a serious pinch of salt. Indeed, when it comes to major scoops like this, it's usually best to have at least three independent sources verifying them. Conrad himself admits he only has the one.
Meanwhile, the question remains whether or not Avengers: Annihilation even fits with the little we know about the title to date. For one thing, it's quite unlikely that Marvel would choose to name Avengers 4 after a comic book arc in the first place. The Russos have even insisted that Avengers 4 is actually an original story. Choosing to name the film after a comic book story would confuse matters, with some viewers going in expecting to see creatures like the Phalanx or cosmic heroes like Nova and the Silver Surfer.
The Russos themselves have said that the closest anyone has gotten is with the guess Avengers: Forever. It's hard to see any connection between that and Avengers: Annihilation. Meanwhile, the directors recently posted an image on social media that was believed to hint at the title. Conrad argues that it's possible to see two letter "A"s on the image, and that these letters stand for Avengers: Annihilation. There's just one problem with that idea; whatever the Russos were trying to get at with their photo, it wasn't anything quite so simple. Even Marvel insiders who know the title, such as Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito, haven't been able to work out what the image means. Whatever the truth may be, it's not going to be anything as easy to spot as looking for two "A"s.
All in all, this seems extremely unlikely. One thing is certain, though; it won't be long now until Marvel Studios reveals the actual title. The marketing campaign for Avengers 4 will probably kick off within the next month or so, and a title announcement would be a smart way of starting it.
