HBO has released a full trailer and poster for its upcoming comedy series Sally4Ever, a British import from creator/writer/director/star Juila Davis. Davis is also the creator of the original U.K. version of Camping, which was recently adapted for U.S. audiences by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, starring Jennifer Garner. Given that connection, it’s no surprise that HBO would like to bring U.S. fans more from Davis with the full seven-episode season of her newest show.
The series takes a different, but no less uncomfortable approach to its comedy. The series stars Davis as Emma, a woman who sweeps Sally, a bored woman about to be wed to her longtime boyfriend, off her feet. Though Emma seems like the answer to Sally’s problems and the start of an exciting and new adventure, she soon proves to be a problem Sally can’t seem to get rid of easily.

Though it is reminiscent of Jennifer Westfeldt's 2001 comedy Kissing Jessica Stein, first trailer delivers a different style of comedy - the sort Davis has become recognized for, with Emma quickly catching the eye of Sally, and Sally’s choice to pursue a relationship with this woman. There are jokes aplenty and even a brief appearance by Sean Bean. Check out the trailer, poster, and synopsis of the series below:
"The story of a love affair that quickly spirals out of control, SALLY4EVER explores love and sex in today’s confused, obsessive and gender-fluid world. The show was created by Julia Davis (creator of the original British series “Camping”), who also executive produces, stars in, and wrote and directed every episode. Sally4Ever follows Sally (Catherine Shepherd), who is about to marry David (Alex Macqueen), her nebbish boyfriend of ten years, when she encounters the charismatic Emma (Julia Davis). The two fall into a romantic relationship, but what starts out as an exciting and sexy fling takes an unexpected turn when Emma reveals herself to be an absolute nightmare. Produced for HBO and Sky Atlantic by Hush Ho and Various Artists Ltd.; created by Julia Davis; executive produced by Julia Davis, Sam Bain, Jesse Armstrong and Phil Clarke.”
HBO has been gathering talent from international sources as part of its bid to take on Netflix directly. The premium cabler has included a variety of new programming to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, rather than relying solely on homegrown programs. Whether or not Sally4Ever is a huge hit when it debuts in November is likely beside the point for HBO, as this series will make a welcome addition to its streaming catalog, which should attract viewers (and subscribers) for years to come.
