Avatar 2 has been nearly a decade in the making and is set to return audiences to the magical 3D world of Pandora, the home of the Na'vi and a host of other magical creatures. The movie will see Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and most of the other original cast members return with the addition of Kate Winslet and more. Little is known about the story, but James Cameron has spent years developing new technology for shooting motion capture underwater, so it can be presumed that Avatar 2 will again raise the bar for CGI and 3D effects, like its predecessor.

Avatar 2 Has Some Big Returning Characters
Avatar 2 features a ton of returning cast members from the first Avatar movie. Sam Worthington is reprising his role as Jake Sully, a former U.S. Marine (and human) who became a part of the Na'vi by transferring his consciousness into his avatar's body. Zoe Saldana also returns as Neytiri - the Na'vi woman who Jake fell in love with - with CCH Pounder reprising her role as Neytiri's mother, Mo'at.
As for the humans, Stephen Lang is returning as the series' main antagonist, Colonel Miles Quaritch, despite dying in the first film, and Giovanni Ribisi will be joining him as the Research Development Administration's corporate head, Parker Selfridge. Joel David Moore is also coming back as Dr. Norm Spellman, with Dileep Rao as Dr. Max Patel, and Matt Gerald as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet - each of who sided with the Na'vi in the first Avatar.
While each actor and actress is reprising their roles from the first Avatar movie, it was never confirmed if Sigourney Weaver will be playing Dr. Grace Augustine again. Weaver is returning for Avatar 2 and its sequels, but she indicated in 2014 that her part will be different in each film and that she will "transform" in each one.

Avatar 2 Has A Lot of New Characters
Avatar 2's cast consists of plenty of new actors and actresses in addition to its returning cast, most of whom are playing Na'vi characters. Cliff Curtis is playing the Metkayina clan's leader, Tonowari, with Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, and Duane Evans Jr. each playing Metkayina free-divers and hunters: Tsireya, Aonung, and Rotxo, respectively. Kate Winslet is also joining the Avatar universe as one of Metkayina's free-divers. Her character, Ronal, plays an integral role in each of the upcoming Avatar sequels.
Since the movie takes place several years after the events of the first Avatar, Jake and Neytiri will have grown children in the sequel. Jamie Flatters plays their oldest son, Neteyam, with Britain Dalton playing their youngest son, Lo'ak. So far, the only new human character being added in Avatar 2 is Javier Socorro, who's played by Jack Champion in what could be a breakout role for the actor. Oona Chaplin is also starring in Avatar 2 as Varang, though it's unclear if she's playing a human or Na'vi.

Avatar 2's Villain Is Stephen Lang's Col. Quaritch
Avatar 2's villains haven't been revealed yet aside from Stephen Lang reprising his role as Colonel Miles Quaritch, who led the human/RDA side of the conflict in the first Avatar movie. Although not much is known about his character's return or his purpose, it has been revealed that Lang's character will serve as the main villain in all four Avatar sequels.

What Is Avatar 2's Story About?
Avatar 2's story seems to take place at least a decade after the events of the first Avatar movie (though that hasn't been confirmed yet), based on the ages of actors playing Jake and Neytiri's children - not to mention the rest of the young cast as well - primarily because the film's characters are brought to life using motion-capture. Although actual story details haven't been revealed yet, it's easy to deduce that the RDA will once again play an integral role in a new conflict with the Na'vi.

Avatar 2 Is Directed By James Cameron
Avatar 2 is being directed by James Cameron, which marks the filmmaker's second directorial effort this century. Cameron spent 15 years developing the first Avatar movie and he's spent almost the same amount of time developing its sequel. He first revealed plans to make two Avatar sequels in 2006 if the first movie had proven successful, which it did. But development on Avatar 2 (and its sequels) have been slow going ever since Cameron originally announced plans to prioritize his Avatar novel in 2010.
Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 were originally supposed to release in December 2014 and 2015, respectively, which were expected to film back-to-back, but the Avatar sequels were constantly delayed due to various reasons. After several years and multiple setbacks, Avatar 2 is finally slated to release in December 2020 - one year after Disney/Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy wraps up. After all, Cameron once mentioned that part of the reason for the delays was because no one wanted to compete with Star Wars.

Avatar 2 Could Be Titled The Way of Water
Avatar 2 may be titled The Way of Water, according to a report from the BBC. Similar to Star Wars and many other major franchises, James Cameron may potentially drop the numbers from the Avatar sequel titles and instead use a subtitle. However, it's also possible that he may take a similar route to his Terminator movies and use a combination of both, similar to Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In that case, Avatar 2 could theoretically be titled Avatar 2: The Way of Water.
Avatar 2's Trailer Hasn't Released Yet
Avatar 2's trailer hasn't released yet. Considering that the film only started production in September 2017 and isn't supposed to release until December 2020, it seems likely that fans will have to wait until at least December 2019 to see the first teaser trailer, possibly attached to J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX - but that remains to be seen.

Avatar 2's Poster Hasn't Released Yet
Avatar 2's poster hasn't released yet either. While fans will have to wait quite some time to see the first trailer, it's possible that 20th Century Fox will start marketing the sequel with a teaser poster at the Licensing International Expo, either in 2018 or 2019. Fox could also release the first teaser poster at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. However, considering that Fox didn't start marketing the first Avatar movie until just four months prior to its release, audiences may have to wait a long time to see anything related to the movie. It's worth pointing out, though, that Fox has been using special Avatar artwork (above) as a means of marketing the Avatar sequels. Furthermore, it was revealed that Avatar 2 (and its sequels) won't use Papyrus font anymore.
Avatar 2 Is The First of 4 Avatar Sequels
Avatar 2 is only the first of four Avatar sequels. James Cameron initially planned to make just two sequels, but then more and more installments kept getting added to the docket every time production on Avatar 2 was delayed. A third Avatar sequel was officially confirmed in 2013, with a fourth being announced in 2016 - two years after Avatar 2 was originally supposed to release. All four Avatar sequels are filming back-to-back primarily in California. Avatar 2 releases in December 2020, with each subsequent sequel releasing consecutively in December until Avatar 5 closes out the saga in December 2025. Together, they all have a collective budget exceeding $1 billion.

Avatar 2 Features Underwater Sequences
Avatar 2 is meant to explore the oceans of Pandora, which is why James Cameron has been hyping up the sequel's extensive underwater sequences. According to Stephen Lang, Avatar 2 and its underwater sequences are like Avatar "on steroids," which is only possible because Cameron seems to have cracked the code on filming motion-capture underwater for the first time in film history. The cast and crew, including the likes of Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver, have mentioned that they had to learn both free-diving and scuba diving for their roles in Avatar 2.

Avatar 2 May Film In 48 Frames Per Second (FPS)
Avatar 2 may film and be presented in 48 frames per second (fps), which is double the industry standard 24 fps. James Cameron initially expressed interest in potentially shooting the film in 48 or 60 fps to give audiences a heightened sense of reality. It was believed that the idea may have been walked back following the release of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012, which was shot in 48 fps and was poorly received by critics and audiences alike, but Cameron has said (as of 2014) that he still intends on shooting in 48 fps.

Avatar 2 Doesn't Have a Composer
Oscar-winning film composer James Horner has scored three of James Cameron's biggest and most memorable films: Aliens, Titanic, and Avatar. He was slated to return and compose Avatar 2's soundtrack, but sadly, he died in a plane crash in 2015. There's currently no word on who James Cameron and 20th Century Fox will hire to replace Horner as Avatar 2's composer.
