Equalizer TV Reboot Starring Queen Latifah In The Works At CBS

The Equalizer is getting the reboot treatment in the form of a TV series from CBS, with Queen Latifah slated for the starring role. Created by Richard Lindheim and Michael Sloan, the original series ran on CBS from 1985 to 1989. Starring Edward Woodward, The Equalizer show reached a new audience and box office success when it was adapted into two feature films starring Denzel Washington as the titular character.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, The Equalizer film follows Robert McCall (Washington), a retired Marine with a dark past who lives a quiet life in Boston. Atoning for the sins of his past, McCall’s idle existence is upended after an encounter with violent Russian gangsters. With a star-studded cast, including Chloe Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman, and Melissa Leo, The Equalizer spawned a successful sequel, which was released in 2018. Now, CBS is rebooting the classic series and film franchise and bringing the vigilante action thriller back to the small screen. Now, The Equalizer will be reimagined with a woman in the leading role.

According to Deadline, CBS has ordered a pilot for The Equalizer, with Queen Latifah set to play the starring role. Following the footsteps of the original premise, Latifah will play an enigmatic woman who uses her extensive skills to help people who have nowhere else to turn. Should The Equalizer go to series, it would mark one of several regular TV roles for the star. However, Latifah won't just be playing the main character in the pilot; the actress will also serve as an executive producer on the series along with original co-creator Lindheim. In addition, Castle creators Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller will serve as showrunners.

Starting her career as a singer and songwriter, Latifah transitioned seamlessly into the film industry with a starring role in Living Single. She was also nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Chicago. More recently, the star has been a regular TV presence on shows like The Queen Latifah Show and Empire. Now, she could be bringing her considerable talents to CBS. If ordered for a full series, The Equalizer will join CBS' roster of reboots, which include Hawaii Five-O, MacGyver, and Magnum P.I.

Latifah continues to make her mark on Hollywood, and The Equalizer isn't the only potential adaptation on her plate. She will also appear as Ursula in ABC’s upcoming live staging of The Little Mermaid. Given Latifah’s ability to inhabit her roles and the surroundings of her character, she’s an ideal choice to tackle the intricate, resilient, and defensive lead character of The Equalizer. Of course, taking over a character previously played by Denzel Washington is no easy feat. Securing a major star like Latifah could help CBS add one more successful reboot to its TV lineup.
