Gossip Girl: 10 Continuity Errors That Fans Probably Didn't Notice

Gossip Girl, based on a YA book series of the same name, aired on the CW from 2007 to 2012. The show centered around an attractive and affluent group of teens living in New York's Upper East Side: Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass, Dan Humphrey and Nate Archibald. These characters certainly knew how to bring the drama, especially with a blogger named Gossip Girl reporting their every move.

While the show was a success, there were some continuity errors and other little mishaps that only true fans may have caught. You know you love us, because we've highlighted 10 of these very mistakes.

10 The Change Of Eleanor Waldorf

Eleanor Waldorf is Blair’s mother, so she is seen pretty often. However, two different actresses portrayed her in this teen drama, and everyone just went on normally, as if a change hadn’t occurred at all. In the pilot episode, an actress named Florencia Lozano played this part, but for the rest of the series, actress Margaret Colin took over. Regardless of why a switch took place and how people felt about it, it was for the best, to be honest, because it is hard to imagine anyone but Colin in this role.

9 William van der Woodsen’s School

Another parent on the show was William van der Woodsen, Serena’s father. He was not on very often, but things were always quite exciting when he was.

At one point within the story, Serena told Dan that her dad went to school at Harvard. Later, though, she told Blair it was Columbia. Did he go to two different universities? Was Serena just confused? Was she lying to make him sound smart? Or was this simply a continuity error that is now known by the world?

8 Lily’s Age

This next mishap has to do with Serena’s mom, Lily. One of the best episodes of the entire series showed this character at a young age. Set in the '80s, the episode was called “Valley Girls," and it starred a young Lily as played by actress Brittany Snow. ("Valley Girls" was meant to be a spin-off series, but plans were scrapped.) All of the fantastic music featured in the episode was released in or before 1983, which is the actual and assumed year in which this story took place.

This episode showed young Lily driving a car… but adult Lily’s passport displayed her birth year as 1969. Therefore, she would have just been 14 at that time, meaning she was driving illegally.

7 Chuck’s Romantic History

Chuck certainly made the rounds with the ladies, but some fans are a little confused about when it all started and with whom. He made everyone gasp by saying that Georgina was his first. Later on, though, he said it was actually an Italian au pair that he was involved with back in the day.

Once again, so many questions come to mind: Who was it really? Why doesn’t he remember? And how did this additional mistake make its way into the show?

6 Reflecting Errors

The eighth episode of the first season was titled “Seventeen Candles”, and it had a couple of errors that were caused by reflections. Chuck’s limo pulled up to a church, a church Blair was exiting. In the reflection of the limo,a cameraman could be seen. When Blair got closer to the vehicle, her reflection showed her in sunglasses, but she wasn’t really wearing any in the close-up shots. She was wearing them when she walked out of the church, though, and the cameramen could be seen once again, in the glasses' reflection.

5 Dan & Vanessa’s Friendship

There were tons of relationships featured within this story, and one was between Dan and Vanessa. However, they didn’t seem to be on the same page about it all.

Dan said he had been friends with her since they were six. Vanessa said she had been friends with him since they were in the third grade. That doesn’t add up at all, and viewers were as confused as these two characters seemed to be.

4 Charlie & Serena’s Relationship

Another relationship featured Charlie and Serena. Now, at first everyone thought they knew who Charlie was, but she was really an actress named Ivy pretending to be Serena’s cousin. And once, when these two were having coffee together, they talked about being on a yacht that belonged to one of Lily's ex-boyfriend’s. Later on in the series, though, Lola (who was the real Charlie) said she had never met Serena. What is the real truth here, ladies?

3 Nate’s Hair

Aw, Nate. He was a fan favorite and he had that all-American vibe that made viewers and fellow characters fall in love with him. However, there was a mishap regarding his character.

In the first episode, he had shaggy hair then short hair then shaggy hair again. Many of the characters changed up their looks over time, but it would be impossible to make such a drastic change that quickly. Lucky for Mr. Archibald, though, he looked good all the time and with any hairstyle.

2 The Bus

One thing was for sure: Chuck Bass was always going to ride around in style, particularly  in his personal limo. In the first episode, however, a huge error took place.

Three guys were shown on their way to school: Nate, Chuck and Dan. Based on where they lived, it doesn’t seem likely that they would all have the same bus route. Plus, Dan was always shown walking to school after that. And, let's be real, Chuck Bass would never lower himself to a public commute.

1 Headmistress Queller

There was one other actress who, at times, appeared on this teen drama and was played by two different people: Headmistress Queller. She was the boss lady in charge at the girls’ school, Constance Billard. In the first two seasons, she was portrayed by an actress named Linda Emond. But when she was shown in the fourth season, she was portrayed by an actress named Jan Maxwell. Did they think people wouldn’t notice this? We suppose we forgive them for the error; Gossip Girl was and still is a great show.
