House Stark is one of the major Houses in Westeros and, for most of Game of Thrones, the wardens of the North. The family had tumultuous storylines throughout the series, resulting in secrets about true parentage, arranged marriages, separation from each other, and many deaths.
Like other fanbases in all aspects of popular culture, the Game of Thrones fanbase often expressed their reactions to each of the various characters from the Stark family, and sometimes the family itself, and their story arcs through memes. Here are ten hilarious memes that will have you laughing out loud until your stomach hurts.
10 Commentary On Rickon's Running Abilities
In the season six episode "Battle of the Bastards," Ramsay Bolton, who had previously held Rickon Stark captive, returned Rickon to Jon and Sansa by making him run across a yet-to-be-used battleground. Rickon, eager to return to his family ran across the field in a straight line, giving Ramsay the opportunity to shoot arrows at him, finally successful just as Jon reaches Rickon.
Many fans say that Rickon should have run in a zigzag, which would have lessened his chances of getting shot, hence the meme stating that Rickon could not turn left or right. This meme may be too soon for some people but will cause others to crack up upon reading.
9 The True Roles Of The Stark Children
At the beginning of the series, fans had pegged the four ultimately-surviving Stark children as follows: Bran as the brains because of his intellect, visions, and eventual role as the Three-Eyed Raven; Sansa as the looks because most fans view her as merely a pretty face; Jon as the muscle because of his fighting skills shown in Winterfell and the Night's Watch; and Arya as the wildcard due to her fierce and wild nature and her near series-long pursuit of vengeance.
Season eight proved Bran to be the true wildcard with his apathetic nature from being the Three-Eyed Raven; Sansa the actual brains with her mind for survival, strategy, and leadership; Jon to be the looks because he is actually pretty useless compared to the other Stark children; and Arya to be the true muscle as shown through her combat skills, especially during the Long Night.
8 About Jon Snow And Daenerys's Awkward Romance
For most of Jon Snow's life, he was believed to be the bastard of Ned Stark. However, during season seven, as Jon and Daenerys Targaryen developed romantic feelings for each other, Samwell Tarly discovered that Jon was actually the legitimate son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys's brother.
This meme comments on the true nature of their familial relationship with each other and recontextualizing it to the modern-day using the trope of an aunt (Dany) giving socks as a Christmas present, with Jon, the nephew, overly-excited about the gift.
7 The Hound's Shared Mindset With Mrs. Weasley
Harry Potter fans know how protective Mrs. Weasley is of her children, both her biological children and the children such as Harry and Hermione who she took under her wing as her own. While Sandor Clegane, also known as The Hound, in Game of Thrones does not show much emotion, he develops a soft spot for Arya Stark due to time spent together traveling Westeros.
The Hound has a fear of fire due to a past trauma at his brother's hand, but when it comes to Arya, even fire cannot get in his way of protecting her, making his and Mrs. Weasley's sentiments virtually the same.
6 Likening Dany and Sansa To Elsa And Anna
This meme is yet another one about Jon's true parentage. Sam originally revealed Jon's parentage to him in private in the catacombs, which Jon initially kept secret. However, he eventually told Dany, and Sansa and Arya out of his respective loyalties and love for them. Bran already knew since he was the Three-Eyed Raven.
Because Jon's true parentage meant he had a claim to the Iron Throne, he was romantically involved with Dany, and Sansa distrusted Dany, Elsa (as Dany) and Anna (as Sansa) have the perfect reactions to Jon's revelation.
5 The Button That Would Make Northerners Wish It Was That Easy
One of the major storylines for House Stark is northern independence from the Seven Kingdoms with the Starks being named rulers of the North. The first Stark to be named King in the North was Robb, followed by Jon (then still believed to be a Stark by the majority of Northerners), and finally, Sansa was rightfully named Queen in the North during the series finale.
The Northerners were quick to change loyalty to the next-eligible Stark whenever a Stark was killed or banished, hence the Northerners being likened to aggressively pushing a button entitled "King in the North."
4 This Nod to Two Of Sean Bean's Major Roles
Sean Bean is known for playing Boromir in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, among other roles. In Fellowship, Boromir notably states during a meeting in Rivendell that "One does not simply walk into Mordor."
This meme takes that quote and puts it into the context of the World of Ice and Fire, where Ned has children, who would not understand the saying and would pass it off as incoherent rambling, in this case, Sansa and Arya.
3 The Prophecy About Cersei Coming True In An Unexpected Way
In season five, it is revealed that Cersei sought out knowledge of her future from a witch named Maggy, who informed her that she would, in fact, be queen before being overthrown by someone younger and more beautiful. This caused Cersei to feel threatened by Sansa Stark and Margaery Tyrell, both of whom were engaged to be married to her sons, though it is eventually revealed to be Dany, who does overthrow her.
This meme turns the quote on its head by showing Bran, who eventually rules of over Westeros, to be the person younger and more beautiful who takes the throne after her.
2 How Arya Took Out The Night King
Earlier this year, the meme of Jason Momoa, known for his roles as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe and Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, sneaking up on his Justice League costar Henry Cavill, who played Superman, was trending. As a result, this meme of Jason Momoa as Arya sneaking up on Henry Cavill as the Night King was created.
This is a hilarious and exaggerated retelling of how Arya actually did sneak up on the Night King from behind and was able to defeat him still from behind.
1 Bran The Three-Eyed Raven's Return To Winterfell
After Bran became the Three-Eyed Raven, he became, for the most part, distant, apathetic, and even more quiet than he was before. Because of his quiet nature, and probably his new yet mostly unknown moniker of the Three-Eyed Raven, combined with his status as a cripple, cause the people of Winterfell to pay him no mind.
However, Bran would make himself known when he felt he needed to, usually with some kind of important, yet startling information. This makes this iconic moment from The Office a perfect meme to describe Bran in relation to others in Winterfell.
