While Hermione and Ron might be the two members of the trio from Harry Potter that end up in a romantic relationship, many people have argued that Hermione and Harry would have been a much better choice. While Ron and Hermione might be canon, and many fans do love these two, there are others that have noted their relationship had many flaws. Even J.K. Rowling has talked about how their relationship might not have made a lot of sense.
Because of this, we’ve put together a list of the five reasons why Hermione and Harry would make a great couple as while as the five reasons they’d be awful together.
10 GREAT: THEY WERE OPEN WITH EACH OTHER ABOUT THEIR EMOTIONS
While Ron, Harry, and Hermione might have all been good friends, it was the friendship between Harry and Hermione where emotions were talked about in the most mature way.
Harry could talk to her about things such as his relationship with Cho and his grief over his parents when they visited their graves in Godric’s Hollow. Harry could also usually sense when Hermione was upset about something and often see her side of things much more than Ron ever could.
9 AWFUL: THERE IS A LACK OF ROMANTIC TENSION BETWEEN THEM IN THE BOOKS
While a relationship might look good on paper, part of what makes a romantic relationship happen is chemistry. In the books at least, there is very little romantic chemistry or tension between Harry and Hermione.
While they might care for each other deeply, they just don’t get those butterfly feelings when they are together. So, while they might work together on a practical sense, the chemistry just doesn't seem to be there.
8 GREAT: THEY RARELY ARGUED
One of the biggest issues that fans have pointed out between Ron and Hermione’s relationship is how much they always argued.
While this might have seemed normal for them as they were bickering all the time, even as friends, it doesn’t seem like the best foundation for a long-lasting romantic partnership. Harry and Hermione, on the other hand, didn’t argue very much at all. They could usually work through disagreements much more quickly.
7 AWFUL: HARRY WAS TOO DRAMATIC FOR HERMIONE AT TIMES
While all three members of the trio could be dramatic and overly emotional at times, the way Harry expresses his emotions seems like it would wear on Hermione with time. While Ron could also be dramatic, he wasn’t as intense about deep emotions as Harry was.
Where someone like Ginny is a little more grounded, Hermione can get upset by dramatic emotions, so this might not work out that well between them.
6 GREAT: HERMIONE NEVER ABANDONED HARRY
Hermione in many ways is truly Harry’s most loyal friend in the Harry Potter series. While Ron is a great friend in many ways, there are times where he falters. He has two notable times where he abandons Harry in a time of need, but Hermione never does this. This goes to show that she would make an extremely loyal and steady romantic partner.
This would have been really good for Harry to have especially because so many people in his life have left him in one way or another.
5 AWFUL: HARRY CLEARLY HAD MUCH MORE OF A ROMANTIC CONNECTION WITH GINNY
While Hermione might have been a great friend to Harry, and Harry clearly cared a lot about and appreciated her, he definitely had a lot more chemistry with someone like Ginny or even Cho. He never really saw Hermione in a romantic way, and it seems like he needs someone who is a little more charming and charismatic.
Given that Harry also has some of these traits, someone who is a little more subdued and serious might not have been the best match for him.
4 GREAT: THEIR SUPPORT AND LOYALTY TO ONE ANOTHER WAS VERY STRONG
Harry and Hermione were really good friends. Seeing that friendship is often an important and stable foundation for a romantic relationship, this would bode well for them being successful together as a couple.
While Hermione was a really upstanding friend to Harry, he was also a good friend to her. He would stick up for her, and he understood her better than Ron did most of the time.
3 AWFUL: THE RELATIONSHIP WOULDN’T HAVE ALLOWED HERMIONE TO SHINE
While Harry and Hermione worked well as friends, Hermione would occasionally get jealous if Harry did better than her at schoolwork. While she wasn’t as upset as Ron would sometimes get about Harry overshadowing them, being in a romantic relationship would have pushed her to a side and supporting role almost entirely.
Hermione is a very capable and driven person, and being seen only as Harry’s wife or girlfriend wouldn’t have allowed her own accomplishments to shine as much.
2 GREAT: THEY’RE MUCH BETTER AS FRIENDS
There’s no denying that Harry and Hermione are great friends and that they care about each other deeply. However, just because you love someone as a friend doesn’t mean that a romantic relationship would work. Friendships can be just as deep and important, but they are just a different kind of relationship.
Many of the things that make them work so well as friends might not translate well into romance. They both see the world rather differently, and they don’t have a ton of shared hobbies or interests.
1 AWFUL: HARRY DIDN’T GIVE AS MUCH TO THE RELATIONSHIP AS HERMIONE DID
While these two were both good friends to one another, the friendship could be rather one-sided at times. Because of everything that Harry was dealing with, Hermione was usually the one who was helping him. She was in more of a support role, and while she was happy to do it, this dynamic might not have worked as well in a couple situation.
Someone like Ginny who didn’t spend her whole life helping Harry and supporting him allowed a relationship to form that was less one-sided.
