The Rise Of Skywalker is finally here and is dominating the conversation among fans. No matter anyone's opinion on the movie—and there certainly are a lot of opinions—the film marks the end of the sequel trilogy and the first set of Star Wars films under the Disney banner and the Skywalker saga.
As all fans know the Force and consequently Force powers are a huge part of the franchise and its lore. For over forty years, fans have been shown a variety of new force powers and abilities. The Disney era of films has been no different and has introduced us to various new force powers in the sphere of the films. Here is every new force power introduced in the sequel trilogy.
NOTE: These force powers may have appeared in other media, but, if their first film appearance has been in the Disney trilogy (e.g appeared in The Clone Wars but its first film was The Force Awakens, then it gets a spot on the list). Also, potential spoilers for The Rise of Skywalker
11 Force Stasis
Force stasis is an ability that is seen in the opening scene of The Force Awakens, however, it has appeared before, first in The Clone Wars, as well as various other comics and also in books and video games. It is simply the ability to use the force and immobilize both objects and people.
During the attack on Tuanul, Poe Dameron shoots at Kylo Ren, only for Kylo to use Force stasis to freeze the blaster bolt in its path as well as restrain Poe for the stormtroopers to take them away. It is the films only new power with mind probe being seen in Return Of The Jedi.
10 Force Sever
A strange power in that it is never seen, nor is the process seen, nor is it a power, depending on your view of power. Force sever is seen in Rebels with Kanan Jarrus and Jedi: Fallen Order in Cere. However, its first movie appearance comes in The Last Jedi with Luke Skywalker.
Luke, after believing he had failed everyone with Ben Solo's downfall, and with his moment of weakness in thinking about perhaps striking him down, severed his connection with the Force, disallowing it from communicating with him. It is an ability Luke claims hard to master, especially as the Force still tried to get to him.
9 Floating/Instinctive Survival
One of the most controversial and divisive moments of the Skywalker saga is a Force power that has been described more like instinct than a power.
When blasted into the vacuum of space in The Last Jedi, fans seem to be watching Leia pass. However, she then begins to move her fingers before floating through space back to her ship. A great idea with questionable execution.
8 Force Bond
One of the highlights of the sequel trilogy is the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren. In The Last Jedi, fans see the film debut (seen in both animated shows) of Force bond, a power that connects two Force users, allowing them to share visions and communicate with each other.
In The Last Jedi, Kylo and Rey share this connection to discuss Luke and Snoke, and Kylo shows Rey his version of events the night he turned to the dark side when Luke thought about striking him down. The power is one of the best parts of the film before it is developed further in The Rise Of Skywalker.
7 More Power In Force Spirits
Force spirits have been a part of Star Wars since Obi-Wan's call to Luke in Star Wars: A New Hope. From there the lore has been built on through various means, but, in The Last Jedi, fans begin to see more power in them.
In the film, Yoda comes to Luke, and, with the knowledge that Rey has taken the sacred texts, uses the force to strike lightning/summon a strike of lightning into the tree as well as use his stick to hit Luke. Then, in The Rise Of Skywalker fans see Luke's spirit catch a lightsaber thrown by Rey.
6 Force Projection
Debuting in The Last Jedi, Force projection is an ability which allows its user to project themselves through the Force and interact with the surroundings they project themselves too, even if they physically are not there.
It is used by Luke on Ach-To to project himself to Crait, interact with Leia, confront Kylo and the First Order, and help the Resistance escape the planet and keep hope alive. He then becomes one with the Force, the power taking that much of his energy and strength.
5 Floating Meditation
A power that feels like it has appeared in films before but actually debuts in The Rise Of Skywalker, floating meditation does what it says on the tin: it is a Force user in a state of meditation, levitating off the ground, surrounded by objects.
In The Last Jedi, Luke can be seen floating in the air as he Force projects, though this is more a feat of using the Force to such strain it causes him to levitate. Rey, in Rise Of Skywalker, uses it more deliberately. As she is training with Leia, she is floating in the air surrounded by rocks as she meditates, trying to connect with the Jedi of the past.
4 Force Healing
The Force power that bore the most impact on The Rise Of Skywalker's plot is Force healing. It is a power used throughout Legends in comics, books, and video games, and is even used by Obi-Wan on Luke in Star Wars, but not in canon. It uses the practitioners Force energy to heal the wound - removing from their vitality in the meantime.
The first instance of this power is Rey using it to heal a sandworm. The next time it is seen is when Rey saves Kylo Ren's life by healing the lightsaber wound she gave him. Then, it is used by Ben Solo to save Rey from death after she appears to die after using that much Force energy to kill Palpatine. This act did the same to Ben, using all of his power and life energy to save Rey.
3 Transfer of Physical Items Through Force Bond
This is an extension of a previous Force power, but it's a huge one. While Force bond previously only allowed the users to see each other but not their surroundings, in The Rise Of Skywalker it allowed them to see and transfer some physical items.
When Rey and Kylo are connected on both Kijimi and Kylo's Star Destroyer, they engage in a lightsaber battle despite not being together. Then, when they destroy Vaders helmet's podium on the ship, Kylo can see the helmet on the ground while he is on Kijimi. Later this goes a step further as Rey and Ben Solo use their bond to connect while Ben fights the Knights of Ren and Rey is face-to-face with Palpatine, Rey transfers the lightsaber she is wielding to Kylo, which he uses to kill the Knights.
2 Transfer Essence
A famous power from Legends, transfer essence is the ability of a dark side Force user to transfer their consciousness and essence into another being or an inanimate object.
In The Rise Of Skywalker, Palpatine wants to do this to Rey, for her to strike him down so he can transfer his consciousness to her body. After Rey refuses and Ben comes to help her defeat Palpatine, Palpatine absorbs the life essence of them both. So, rather than transferring his essence to them, he transferred the essence of Ben and Rey into him, healing and rejuvenating himself.
1 Extremely Powerful Force Lightning
A force power that is well known in Star Wars, Force lightning is one of the Sith's and dark side Force user's signature powers, especially Palpatine in the movies. This continues with his appearance in The Rise Of Skywalker.
This time Palpatine's lightning is far more powerful, though, as he shoots it into the sky, immobilizing all Resistance ships, yet keeping all the Final Order ships in the air.
