Stranger Things: 10 Worst Things The Gang Did To Will

Will Byers has always been the heart and soul of Stranger Things since his unfortunate disappearance led to the uncovering of the strange phenomenon that was happening in Hawkins, Indiana. From the time he appeared onscreen, Will has been a humble and selfless child who tries to cope with the trauma of his captivity to the Upside Down.

Will has been trying to recapture the glory days that were taken from him during his childhood and reconnect with his gang. But one has to acknowledge that the gang has committed some errors that have affected him. Here are ten of them.

10 Sneaking into a preview of Day of the Dead

On the first episode of Season 3 “Chapter One: Suzie, Do You Copy?”, Lucas, Max and Will sneak into the movies to watch a preview of George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead. That alone is an act of adolescent foolishness.

But considering that Will still inhibits his innocent 12-year-old mindset, it does not justify the gang’s actions. And it slightly gives the illusion that their preview triggers the Mind Flayer’s senses on Will’s nape.

9 Revealing Will’s truth to Max

Back in season 2, episode 5 “Chapter Five: Dig Dug”, Max suspected the gang was turning her down, especially when it came to discussions involving Eleven and Will’s stories. Lucas, not wanting to leave her behind, revealed the whole story from season 1.

While this allows Max to slowly understand the conflict and join the party, it is striking that Lucas would break the gang’s trust to win a girl. Even Dustin rebuked him for this.

8 Exposing him to fireworks

When the party, including Jonathan and Nancy, pulled over in Bradley’s Big Buy to tend to Eleven’s wounds, Max told Lucas to retrieve a bowl. However, he and Will stumbled upon a display of Satan’s Baby fireworks, resulting in Lucas to reveal his penchant for pyrotechnics.

While this fixation on fireworks came out of nowhere from Lucas, he was kind of neglectful when he let Will help him light up fireworks during the Mind Flayer’s invasion.

7 Keeping Dart

D’Artagnan or Dart is of the same species as the Demogorgon, but before the party got this knowledge, Dustin kept it as a pet and fed it Three Musketeers bars.

When he showed the creature to the party, Will sensed a similar frequency from Dart than the one he sensed from the Upside Down. When he pleaded to them to get rid of Dart, Dustin was the only one who relented and kept Dart, placing Will in jeopardy.

6 Leaving him awkwardly

Back in “Suzie, Do You Copy?”, after the party constructed Dustin’s radio tower, they waited for Dustin’s so-called girlfriend Suzie to respond to his transmission.

Impatient, Will and El “excused” themselves to catch up with a curfew. And eventually, Lucas and Max left Dustin and Will behind. This left Will in an awkward situation and an uncomfortable realization that his best buds are bonding with their own girls. He soon left the vicinity, alone and uneasy.

5 Being overly concerned

It is natural that after a miraculous rescue from a two-year captivity in the Upside Down that Will’s mother, Joyce, his brother Charlie, his other peers, and especially the party to be overprotective and overly concerned over Will’s welfare.

While their concern was reasonable, the gang’s interference with Will’s protection is seemingly heavy for Will to intake, immediately considering himself as an outsider of the party. Worse is that the party rarely acknowledges this overprotectiveness.

4 Defending him less from bullies

Speaking of, even when it comes to overprotectiveness, the party failed to protect Will from the “zombie boy” insults from kids at school. They were kind of silent and irresponsive to avert the insults thrown at him.

The party was instead concerned with his health post-Upside Down, which, again, is reasonable. But it made them look incompetent from social adversaries. Only Jonathan and Bob provided some empathetic catharsis for Will to overcome his personal fears.

3 Displaying rude behavior in front of him

The beginning of the episode “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard” saw Eleven spying on Mike, Lucas and Will in their basement through the radio. She stumbled upon the former two discussing about ways to understand girls, while Will beseeched them to shrug it off.

Nevertheless, Mike, munching on a cheesy Doritos, belched aloud to the two and Lucas joined the fun with flatulence, much to El’s delight and Will’s disgust. Just boys slacking off rudely.

2 Ignoring him casually

The first half of season 3 saw Will trying to recapture his childhood magic by bringing the party together for a game of Dungeons & Dragons.

During their trip to the Starcourt Mall, he kept pleading to Mike and Lucas to forget their girlfriend, only for the two to ignore him and find ways to win Eleven and Max back. Their attention was continually away from him until the result of the next entry arrived.

1 Playing Dungeons & Dragons half-heartedly

The tipping point of offenses to Will came during “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard,” when Will enforced a “no girls day” to Mike and Will for a round of D&D. In his Will the Wise alter ego, he displayed a level of enthusiasm that the boys could not register. This prompted them to phone in and for Mike to forcibly act all out to end early.

As a result, Will vented towards them for ripping the party apart. When Mike addressed the boys growing up and growing apart, the young Byers kid felt the ball dropped at him for having his childhood stolen. And his frustration is shown in him nearly tearing Castle Byers. For fans, when the gang crossed this line, it was reasonably the worst they did to Will.
