There are a lot of things that make a movie memorable. For instance, a stellar cast, an interesting plot, or unforgettable dialogues. However, nothing gets people talking like a puzzling or an unexpected ending.
Not only do these movies spark the viewer’s imagination but they are also great conversation starters. Everyone you speak to seems to have their own interpretation or reasoning behind why the movie ended the way it did.
As the year 2019 ends and marks the end of another decade, we take you down the memory lane and look back at some of the best movie cliffhangers of the decade.
10 Avengers Endgame (2019)
Avengers: Infinity War was a Marvel movie that left so many questions unanswered. Usually, Marvel movies end on a positive note where good wins over evil. This did not happen in Infinity War and that was probably one of the main reasons everyone was waiting with bated breath for this sequel. People wanted to know the fate of their favorite superheroes who had been turned to dust.
Not only did Endgame answer many questions but it was also a fitting end to the first phase of Marvel’s universe. It's also a tearjerker, so keeping tissues handy is recommended, especially for moments where Tony Stark and Black Widow to die.
9 Widows (2018)
Widows is not really a movie you’d expect to catch you by surprise. It’s a story of four widows whose husbands steal from a crime boss and get killed in the process. Now the women have to pay back the amount to keep themselves safe.
The movie takes a crazy turn when one of the widows, Veronica (Viola Davis), finds out that her dead husband really isn’t dead. Then, it is revealed that her husband actually survived the explosion and was faking his death so that he could be with another woman. Talk about deceit!
8 Arrival (2016)
Denis Villeneuve’s emotional, thought-provoking sci-fi movie hits the right chords with the audience. Despite being a sci-fi film, it focuses on emotions and shows how emotions like love are worth the pain. As aliens arrive on planet Earth, the help of a famous linguist Lousie Banks (Amy Adams) and physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) is enlisted to communicate with the aliens to understand what they’ve come for.
Louise figures out that the aliens are there to help humans and as she learns their language, she realizes that the flashbacks she is having throughout the movie are not really flashbacks but images of future events that haven’t happen as yet.
7 Searching (2018)
Searching is a path-breaking thriller that is not only unique in terms of the storyline but also how the story is shared with the audience, i.e. through computer and mobile phone screens. At the beginning of the movie, it is shown that David Kim (John Cho) finds out that his daughter, Margot, has disappeared.
A series of strange events ensue and finally David pieces together the clues to find out that the Detective’s son has a role to play in the disappearance and the Detective took the case to protect his son. The audience, in the end, finally breathes a sigh of relief when they find out that Margot is alive.
6 Us (2019)
Jordan Peele’s Us does not disappoint when it comes to storyline, acting, and direction. The story revolves around a family that one day finds out that they have evil clones (or tether) that have set out to kill them. Then the story unfolds and the viewers are told that every human being has a tether. These individuals live in the underground sewers but have now ventured out into our world.
After a series of crazy plot twists, during the final fight between Red and Adelaide (Lupita Nyongo), it is revealed that a tether switched places with her human counterpart when they were little children.
5 Gone Girl (2014)
David Fincher’s signature style is clearly visible in Gone Girl, a movie that is engaging yet dark and quite honestly, disturbing. He manages to add a couple of twists that were not in Gillian Flynn’s novel to make the movie more interesting but also ensures that the movie does not steer too far away from the original source material.
Similar to the book, the movie ends with the reveal that Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) faked her own kidnapping as well as pregnancy to frame her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) who was cheating on her. Though, the majority of the twists are not surprising for those who have read the book but watching them unfold on the screen is a treat.
4 Shutter Island (2010)
Martin Scorcese’s psychological thriller film is exciting, confusing, and mind-boggling all at the same time. Based on Dennis Lehane's novel, the story revolves around US Marshal Edward Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio). The audience is told that Edward has been sent to Shutter Island to locate a missing person by the name of Rachel Solando.
As the movie progresses the audience finds out that Edward is troubled by nightmares where he sees a young girl and his wife. It is revealed that they were killed by someone called Andrew Laeddis.
As the movie ends, a stunning revelation is made regarding Edward actually being Laeddis and being a patient at the facility.
3 Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Even though many avid comic book fans knew exactly what Thanos was planning to do with the Infinity Stones but no one was really ready for what Avengers: Infinity War had in store. Seeing our favorite superheroes being turned to dust together with half of the human population wasn’t easy.
Also, the ending was different for other Marvel movies because it was the first time where the villain manages to beat the Avengers. Essentially it was a victory of evil over good. The movie left viewers wanting to know more and understand how could things be ‘fixed’.
2 Source Code (2011)
The plot of the movie was very unique, it is the story of a US Army Captain Colter Stevens, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who continues to experience a repeating loop throughout the movie. The loop always ends in a terrible explosion and Stevens is tasked with the job of locating the person responsible for the bombing.
Towards the end, the audience finds out that sadly, Stevens is in a simulation program, known as the Source Code, where memories of a dead soldier’s were being used to try and solve a train bombing case.
It is a brilliant sci-fi twist that gives the movie a hopeful ending which not many fans were expecting.
1 Inception (2010)
Inception probably takes the trophy for the most talked-about movie ending of the century. To this day, people are still wondering about the spinning totem and whether Cobb is still in a dream or he is finally back to reality.
Christopher Nolan has always been famous for making movies with twisted plots that keep his audience on tenterhooks. However, Inception took Nolan’s creativity a step further as it incorporates four stories happening at the same time seamlessly into one movie. Inception is undoubtedly one of the best sci-fi movies of all time.
