While the movie slate for 2020 is jam-packed with tons of highly anticipated films, don't discount what you'll get to see from the comfort of your couch. While movies are still huge events, the small screen is seeing the critical acclaim, from streaming options like Netflix (Stranger Things) and Amazon (The Boys) to cable networks like HBO (Watchmen) and Starz (Outlander).
When it comes to 2020, it will be no different as there are several highly anticipated TV shows hitting the air for the first time to either hit or miss with the fans at home. Here are the top 10 most-anticipated TV shows of 2020, according to IMDb. Please note, this list is not based on IMDb's user scores but the actual page views and popularity of the films, which is determined by data provided by IMDbPro.
10 KATY KEENE - The CW
With the overwhelming popularity of Riverdale on The CW, it is time for a spinoff. While The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was supposed to be the first spin-0ff, it went to Netflix, so the official follow-up now comes in 2020 with Katy Keene.
Based on the character from Archie Comics, Lucy Hale stars as Katy Keene, a fashion designer in New York City. The connection here is that Ashleigh Murray will appear as Josie McCoy from Riverdale, known to fans of Archie as the lead of Josie and the Pussycats.
9 HUNTERS - AMAZON
All it takes to make Hunters one of the most-anticipated TV shows of 2020, or of all time for that matter, is to reveal that one of the stars of the show is none other than the legendary Al Pacino and Jordan Peele produces. Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) joins him in the story of a group of Nazi hunters in 1977.
The TV show will air on Amazon Prime Video in 2020 and supposes that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living in the U.S. in 1977. They plan to try to create the Fourth Reich in the U.S., and it is up to the Hunters to find and eliminate them to stop their evil plan.
8 STARGIRL - DC UNIVERSE
The slate of shows on DC Universe streaming has been surprisingly great. Titans started rocky but ended up a fascinating take on the former sidekick of the Caped Crusader and his teenage companions. Meanwhile, Doom Patrol was a ton of fun, and Swamp Thing was one of the best comic book shows on all of television.
In 2020, Stargirl joins their ranks. Brec Bassinger stars as a high school student who finds a powerful cosmic staff and ends up becoming a new superhero, following in the footsteps of her step-father.
7 THE OUTSIDER - HBO
Stephen King has been on fire lately, with the adaptation of his Mr. Mercedes novels a surprise television hit and with two more TV shows coming in 2020 alone. The first of these hits in January on HBO with The Outsider.
Jason Bateman stars in the series as a man arrested for the murder of a child. While the DNA evidence shows inconclusively that he is guilty, there is also proof that he was nowhere near the town of the murder when it happened. Ben Mendelsohn stars as the detective trying to figure out what really happened in this strange and twisting case.
6 THE STAND - CBS ALL ACCESS
The second Stephen King novel that is coming to television in 2020 is his epic classic The Stand. This book was already made into a miniseries in the '90s with stars like Nick Lowe and Molly Ringwald. The new TV show looks to be able to show more, as it is coming to CBS All-Access.
This version also has an all-star cast with names like James Marsden, Amber Heard, Whoopi Goldberg, and Greg Kinnear. The story is a post-apocalyptic tale of a world where the superflu Captain Tripps wipes out most of the world, and the survivors join one of two camps with a war raging for control of the new world.
5 SNOWPIERCER - TBS
Snowpiercer is based on the French comic books by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand, and Jean-Marc Rochette. The books became a movie with Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, but now it is coming to the small screen. The road has not been easy for the TV show.
Initially, Snowpiercer was supposed to come to TNT, but after three years of development, including showrunner Josh Friedman and director Scott Derrickson walking away, it moved to TBS. Jennifer Connelly leads a cast in the story of a self-sustaining train that keeps the remnants of Earth alive after a new ice age hits the planet, although the separation of rich and poor on the train threatens a civil war.
4 THE WALKING DEAD: WORLD BEYOND - AMC
There has already been one spin-off from The Walking Dead, and movies are coming starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. However, 2020 will see a second spin-off of the zombie series with a brilliant concept. In Walking Dead: World Beyond, the main characters are people born after the zombie apocalypse.
This means seeing the world through the eyes of young people who never knew what it was like before society collapsed. Set 10 years after the world broke down, there is no word on if anyone will cross over from the main shows.
3 THE NEW POPE - HBO
Another HBO series that fans on IMDb seem very excited to see is The New Pope. This TV show stars Jude Law as Pope Plux XIII and John Malkovich as Pope John Paul III, the "new Pope" of the title. The series will play out over nine episodes and is a continuation of a different series titled The Young Pope from 2016.
Law played the young Pope in that previous series as well. This new television series for 2020 is a co-production of HBO and Canal+.
2 THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER - DISNEY+
Disney+ has one of the most beloved shows of 2019 with the Star Wars spin-0ff The Mandalorian, and in 2020, they will also start their slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe television show. The most anticipated of the new shows, according to IMDb, will be The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
This TV show follows up the events of Avengers: Endgame, where Captain America's oldest friend Winter Soldier will team up with Falcon, who Cap gifted with his prized shield at the end of that last Avengers movie.
1 STAR TREK: PICARD - CBS ALL ACCESS
Finally, the most-anticipated television series of 2020 for fans on IMDb is the Star Trek spinoff series, Star Trek: Picard. Of course, as the title suggests, this is about the captain from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Jean-Luc Picard, as he sets out on a new adventure.
Coming to CBS All Access, Picard has been retired and living on a planet where he is still profoundly affected by the death of Data and destruction of Romulus. However, he is brought out of seclusion to help a young woman.
