The Mandalorian Has The Best TIE Fighter Redesign Since 1983

The TIE Fighter has been redesigned for The Mandalorian, and the new model is the best version since Return of the Jedi. After being teased on a Star Wars T-shirt in October, the Outland TIE Fighter made its debut in episode 7 of the Disney+ series.

In the latest episode of the live-action Star Wars series, the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) was put in a situation where he had no choice but to team up with Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) to take down the Client (Werner Herzog) and protect Baby Yoda, Disney+'s most popular character. With Cara Dune (Gina Carano) and Greef Karga at his side, Mando was about to attack the Client when a TIE Fighter and a large group of enemies landed outside and laid waste to the Client and his Stormtroopers. Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) emerges from the TIE Fighter, and is revealed to be the real villain of The Mandalorian's season 1.

The Outland TIE Fighter manages a smooth landing by collapsing its wings into a V-shape so that they touch the ground. Before it was known that the V-shaped wings were for landing only, The Mandalorian's redesigned TIE Fighter was criticized as silly; however, given that the ship's wings collapse for landing purposes only, the Outland TIE Fighter is actually the best redesign since 1983's Return of the Jedi.

The TIE (Twin Ion Engines) Fighter, commonly recognized by Star Wars fans for its small round body and unique vertical wing shape, is one of the most important ships in the world of Star Wars. It cemented its status as one of the franchise's most iconic ships when Darth Vader famously piloted one in his epic space encounter with Luke Skywalker in 1977's Star Wars.

Among the most popular versions of the TIE Fighter was the Interceptor from Return of the Jedi. The TIE Fighter has been redesigned numerous times since for other Star Wars projects, such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Rebels, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and more. However, all of the redesigns following the Interceptor are topped by The Mandalorian's Outland model.

Unused concept art from The Force Awakens is actually what created the design for the new TIE Fighter. Sleek and dark grey with steel trimming, the Outland model is given a grand entrance when its wings fold out and collapse. It's imposing look and unique new features allowed it to make a startling first impression on viewers.
