The Mandalorian's Baby Yoda Crochet Amigurumi By Ming-Na Wen

The Mandalorian’s Ming-Na Wen crocheted her own adorable Baby Yoda amigurumi. The demand for the latest Star Wars craze has not declined in the least since The Child, aka Baby Yoda, first appeared on TV screens around the world last November.

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why the character is so popular is because Star Wars fans simply weren’t expecting it. Despite his size, the character of Yoda – who was first officially introduced on the big screen in 198o’s The Empire Strikes Back – is arguably the biggest character in the Star Wars universe. The tiny Jedi Master was an instant hit with fans upon his reveal, partly due to his quaint manner of speaking and partly due to the immense amounts of skill and power he possessed. Fast-forward to 2019, and although Disney has taken the franchise to new heights by introducing new films and characters, as well as bringing back familiar faces, no one, it seems, was expecting the possible return of Yoda's species.

What there has been a tremendous shortage of, however, is Baby Yoda merchandise. When the new character arrived shortly after the launch of Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, the first thing that fans wanted (aside from an explanation of the character) was merchandise. The very idea of Disney revealing a new character without the opportunity for fans to immediately own some version of it seemed unthinkable. Unfortunately, this was exactly the reality Star Wars fans were presented with, but for now, at least one of the stars of The Mandalorian has taken matters into her own hands. Ming-Na Wen, who played Fennec Shand in the fifth episode of the new series, has posted photos to her Instagram account of the adorable Baby Yoda amigurumi she crocheted. Check them out below:

Admitting her kids “got some tough competition” as the result of her new Baby Yoda toy, Wen seems genuinely overjoyed with her crocheting efforts. The very cute end product of her labor was done without a pattern, meaning that aside from her acting talents, Wen appears to have some serious crocheting skills as well. For those unfamiliar with the concept of amigurumi, it is a Japanese crocheting process used to create small, stuffed yarn creatures. It’s hard to think of a more perfect way to represent Baby Yoda, and it wouldn’t be surprising in the least if Wen’s Instagram account is currently experiencing a deluge of requests from captivated fans wanting to purchase the item. Wen certainly doesn’t appear prepared to part with the piece, so truly desperate fans will just have to learn to make their own.

It has previously been revealed that Disney could stand to lose a hefty chunk of money as a result of not being prepared for the Baby Yoda love currently taking place. While this is worth a thought, it can hardly be considered a serious threat to Disney’s bottom line. What is more of a threat perhaps, is the quality of merchandise fans will get when Baby Yoda memorabilia is finally available in 2020. After delaying the character’s merchandise out of respect for Jon Favreau’s desire to not spoil any of The Mandalorian’s surprises, Disney needs to deliver in a big way. Whether or not they will, however, remains to be seen.
