Star Wars Comic Hinted Snoke Was Actually Palpatine Months Ago

It turns out the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker reveal that former Supreme Leader Snoke was actually a puppet of longtime series villain Palpatine was actually alluded to in a Star Wars comic book issue before the film ever hit theaters. Although introduced as a brand-new bad guy in the first entry of the newest Star Wars film trilogy, Snoke was unexpectedly cut down halfway through the eighth installment in the series, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Both the release of The Rise of Skywalker and The Last Jedi have been marred with controversies surrounding decisions directors J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson made regarding the series' most renowned characters. One of the common complains regarding both films fans continue to bring up is how there are segments of each which feel as if they are directly contradicting the previous entry in the series, causing both confusion and giving the impression the creators have just been making things up as they go along. Some fans felt this way when Snoke was killed in The Last Jedi, and others felt the same when it was revealed Snoke was merely a version of Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker.

However, the seeds of Palpatine's reveal had been planted earlier in the Star Wars universe, specifically in the comic book Star Wars: Age of Resistance - Supreme Leader Snoke series. Confirmed by comic book writer Tom Taylor on Twitterone particular scene in the Age of Resistance series was not only meant to give context and provide atmosphere for the situation at hand, but also foreshadowed what would soon be revealed on the big screen. Check out the panels Taylor shared below:

Judging from the comments Snoke makes to Kylo Ren upon landing on Dagobah, it seems like the evil Emperor Palpatine has not forgotten the way Luke Skywalker resisted his temptations at the end of Return of the JediSnoke expresses fear at the concept of Skywalker's power, and when Ren calls Luke weak Snoke silences him by saying, "If I had your uncle by my side instead of you, the galaxy would have been mine a long time ago."

Such a thing surely would have come to pass, had Luke not been able to resist the Emperor's pull to the Dark Side and in turn convince his father, Darth Vader, to do the same. The above Star Wars comic book panels (especially when coupled with the reveals present in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) show Palpatine never forgot what happened that fateful day he was tossed over a ledge, and a part of him still wishes he had turned Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side. Thankfully, for everyone involved, that's not what happened.
