Like concluding paragraphs in essay, wrapping up a movie can be difficult. Adding a plot twist or a happy ending to send audiences home with can either make or break a film. The finale is the scene viewers and critics wait for, to ensure they see how their beloved characters end up. However, from time to time the ending can be anticlimactic, dull, or simply bad. It spoils everything that came before as a 2-hour investment in a movie is ruined and leaves a bad aftertaste.
Despite the plethora of movies released this past decade, there is a handful of films that missed the mark with wrapping it up. With that, here are the 10 Worst Movie Endings Of The Decade:
10 The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy brought one of the best cinematic depictions of DC's Batman. Each entry brought memorable villains, each with their vendettas against Gotham that challenged Bruce Wayne, forcing him to adapt to save citizens. In the final installment, Bane built a reputation that demanded respect and ruled by fear.
But his death wasn't fitting, blown up quickly by Catwoman. The well-spoken brute was killed quickly and forgotten. Even further, Marion Colitard brought one of the most unconvincing on-screen deaths in cinema history. Don't let one bad apple ruin the whole barrel, but this ending deserved more.
9 Lucy
Lucy has one of the most creative plot lines of the decade, depicting a world where a woman becomes capable of accessing 100% of her brain. A nice balance of sci-fi and action, Lucy was anticipated to be one of the hits of the year. As the movie progresses she becomes more and more intelligent before reaching 100% capacity. And what happens then?
She becomes one with the force and departs like Yoda, Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker. Originality isn't the problem here, but the anticlimactic ending as fans weren't expecting such a Kubrick-Esque finale where the audience decides where she went.
8 The Devil Inside
The Devil Inside was one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2012, setting a box office record in January. The found-footage film follows a possessed woman who killed three priests. But it's not the storyline or ending scene that had fans angry, booing and upset. It's the title card that followed telling fans to visit a website for more information on the case. Yes, the movie made it's audience go online for an answer to the ending. Movies are supposed to be fun, an escape, pure entertainment with no work needed from the audience. This twist didn't sit well, and today it's still hailed as one of the worst movie endings of all time.
7 Avengers: Infinity War Part 1
Another critically acclaimed movie, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 was without a doubt the darkest entry in the series, featuring an unhappy end. To put it simply, the villain won with billions of people dying and shifting away from the brighter endings found in other Marvel movies.
Thanos's vision came to fruition and fans were left feeling hopeless. The major shift was well-received with critics as the series brought a real-life question to the big screen. Overpopulation is a controversial topic and fans were unhappy and with the decision to include it,
6 Man of Steel
Henry Cavill has the face and body for Superman, but his actions in Man of Steel were somewhat unnerving. Heroes supposed to defeat their foes as a means of protecting innocents. But Cavill's method of killing was downright brutal and very much uncharacteristic of Superman. Snapping General Zod's neck was unexpected and lead fans to question whether or not Superman is good at all. What it instilled was a more human version of Superman, where anger and hatred get the better of him. In the realm of Star Wars, who's to say he wouldn't be seduced by the dark side?
5 Buried
A brilliant thriller with a tight filming space (literally), Buried had viewers feeling claustrophobic for the entire ride. With Ryan Reynolds buried beneath the ground, he has limited time to call for help until his phone dies and his oxygen dies.
As terrifying as it is, fans and critics alike were expectingReynolds to make it out after over an hour of struggle with death looming all around him. Nope, he doesn't make it out and is buried alive. Depressing, hopeless and downright tragic, this ending spoiled a great thriller.
4 Remember Me
A typical romance movie has a predictable ending, but not 2010's Remember Me. Not only was the ending bittersweet, but insensitive as it leaves Pattinson in the World Trade Center on September 11th. Pattinson could have been killed off any other way, but the director felt it was subtle to have his death become a part of one of the most tragic events in U.S history. Movies based on historical events are one thing and respectable in their ability to depict the events as accurate as possible. But using such an event like 9/11 for the sake of a romance movie wasn't subtle, it was wrong.
3 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
The series itself ended on a light note with fans in tears, but it's the scene before the concluding shots that had people shaking their heads. With Voldemort defeated, the elder wand is now Harry's having won it fairly. And what does he decide to? Break it in two, and throw it over the Hogwarts bridge. Selfless, yes, but anticlimactic seeing as the finale is named after one of the Deathly Hallows.
The wand's history and significance are unparalleled, being the most powerful in the world. Even the Star Wars franchise did their best to keep the original Skywalker lightsaber intact.
2 Gone Girl
Fans of the book were happy with the cinematic adaption of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, but those who didn't read were left confused and distraught. The sociopathic Amy is crowned the victor and is basically unstoppable. It's unsettling to have a psychopath of character win in the end, especially since her friends welcome her back with open arms. She killed her ex-boyfriend after trying to help her, and the cinematic version is way more brutal than the book. Fans were itching for Amy to pay for her crimes, but she never does. This isn't the same as Thanos winning in the end, this was more sick and twisted.
1 Prisoners
Cliffhangers are fun and fitting for TV shows and movies, adding a layer of surprise fans weren't expecting. But Prisoners had fans scratching their heads as to whether or not Dover would be saved. The whistling heard was enough to catch Loki's attention but it's too ambiguous to confirm whether or not he was saved.
Outside of this, Prisoners is a spectacular thriller with amazing performances from Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. But the ending spoiled what could have been a happy ending seeing Dover's daughter was finally saved.
