The upcoming MCU Black Widow solo film dropped its latest trailer during Super Bowl Sunday. In the spot, Taskmaster pulled off a move very similar to Captain America, while the two Black Widows were shown side by side. Among the action was scattered a number of explosions, but thanks to a Marvel artist, one particular shot is standing out.
From 2016-17, Black Widow had a fantastic 12-issue series from Mark Waid, Chris Samnee and Matt Wilson titled Black Widow (shocker). The series focused on the secrets of Natasha Romanoff and S.H.I.E.L.D. turning against her. While the story is a good espionage thriller, the real standout is the art by Samnee and colors by Wilson. The Black Widow has never looked better. So, it makes sense the MCU film would draw inspiration from the comic.
After the trailer went live, Wilson posted the similarities of a particular shot of the film from the arc he worked on. In the shot, Natasha is seen bursting out of an exploding building with her arms crossed. It's bombastic, and showcases just how far the Black Widow is willing to go for her mission. And thanks to colorist Matt Wilson, fans can appreciate that the shot is directly inspired by a panel from the creative team's 12-issue series. Take a look for yourselves:
From page to screen. Seeing a few Black Widow movie shots inspired by the genius @ChrisSamnee comic art that I was lucky enough to color. (from our really good BW 12 issue run, co-written by Samnee and Mark Waid)
The Black Widow film having such a direct reference to the comics is sure to be one of many treats for the devoted fans. There's plenty of source material the upcoming solo flick could draw from, and to see it reference one of Widow's more modern stories is a great sign. Hopefully, Samnee, Wilson, and Waid are referenced in the 'thank you' section of the end credits. They certainly deserve to be. You can bet there will be a plethora of Easter Eggs and references throughout the film. If Marvel does one thing well it's translating comic moments to the big screen. In Black Widow's case, it would be surprising if they didn't draw from some of her most popular comics including 1999's Black Widow, which featured Yelena Belova and Natasha Romanoff's face-off turned friendship. Although it would be pretty surprising if the film followed 2001's Black Widow plot, where Natasha and Yelena surgically swap their appearances in the name of espionage - although, some panels could be used as inspiration.
It's always exciting to see a comic panel come to life on the big screen. Black Widow's solo movie is going to be action-packed fun. Black Widow is coming to theaters on April 24th, 2020.
