The debut season of Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina featured a quick reference to a popular witch from American Horror Story. When the horror series dropped in October 2018, Ryan Murphy's hit anthology series was in its eighth season, Apocalypse. The season coincidentally saw the return of the witches that were at the focus of season 3's Coven. Here's an explanation into the connection and the meaning behind the small Easter egg.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is based on Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's supernatural comic book series of the same name. The story is derived from Archie Comics characters and serves as a sister series to the CW's Riverdale. The two shows are on different networks but share the same creators, so a shared universe has been established through various cameos and references. There has yet to be a major crossover between the two series, but it seems almost inevitable considering they are set in neighboring towns. Sabrina season 1 went even further by throwing a nod to an entirely different franchise.
Throughout Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the Spellman family has a tendency to bring up their ancestors. Being a family of strong witches and warlocks, it's no surprise that the Spellman line runs deep with members all over the country. In the first season, Hilda even mentioned a cousin she referred to as Montgomery and added that this person was a movie star. This will ring a bell in the heads of American Horror Story fans since Emma Roberts' character in Coven was a witch named Madison Montgomery, a former actress who relocated to attend Miss Robichaux's Academy.
The fact that Roberts' character shared the name Montgomery and played a witch with a history as a movie star seems more than just a coincidence. The character has appeared in multiple seasons of American Horror Story and is expected to appear at least one more time. It could have also stemmed from the fact that Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka, the main witch in focus, previously costarred alongside Roberts in 2015's The Blackcoat's Daughter. The connection, however, wasn't meant to indicate that both shows exist in the same universe.
Just because Hilda mentioned a family member that sounded like Madison Montgomery doesn't mean that deeper connections will be made. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina could have referenced the fan-favorite from another series to simply honor fellow witches in pop culture. It's also plausible that Hilda's line wasn't a reference to American Horror Story but instead, a nod to Elizabeth Montgomery, the actress who played Samantha on Bewitched. Either way, it's fun to speculate on the identity of Hilda's cousin but if crossovers come to the mind of viewers, Riverdale is the only candidate.
