The hosts of Love Is Blind, Vanessa and Nick Lachey, said they were able to relate the premise of the show to their own relationship. When they started dating, they weren't able to see each other often. In Love Is Blind, contestants aren't able to see one another at all before proposing marriage.
Though it officially drops on Netflix the day before Valentine's Day, there is nothing traditional about the love stories that will be created on Love Is Blind. Contestants enter pods, where they speed date without seeing the person on the other side. Some will propose before laying eyes on their future spouse. If the trailer is any indication, not all engagements have a happy ending. Although this experiment hasn't been done before on reality television, it combines a mixture of many different elements from other dating shows. It has been compared to The Circle, The Bachelor, 90 Day Fiancé and Married at First Sight. All these pieces may come together to form another Netflix hit, or it could be overlooked by the plethora of other reality shows that are similar to it.
When Nick found out about this series, he told Today, "Our first thought was, 'How in the world has this not been done before." "You get to know people for the essence of who they are." Vanessa added that this was the foundation of her and Nick's relationship. The two met while Nick was filming a music video for one of his songs. They started dating in 2006, but at the time, Vanessa lived in New York City and Nick resided in Los Angeles. During the long-distance phase of their partnership, they were forced to strengthen their connection without physical intimacy. Said Vanessa, "We really got to know each other on a deeper level."
Today host Hoda Kotb was skeptical of the Love Is Blind process. She asked the Lacheys, "Do they really find love?" Nick countered, "Every scenario you could imagine played itself out on the show." That answer leaves much up to the imagination.
Simply from what the trailer revealed, it appears that one woman runs from the altar on her wedding day, a rom-com movie scene come to life. It has to be assumed, however, that at least one relationship does end in marriage. Otherwise, the question the Lacheys ask as hosts of the show, whether love is indeed blind, would be a resounding and emphatic no. Luckily for them, unconventional beginnings has led to a happy 14-year relationship, a marriage and three kids.
The first five episodes of Love Is Blind drops on Netflix on Thursday, Feb. 13.
