Superstore star America Ferrera will leave the series at the end of season 5, currently airing on NBC. Premiering in 2015, Superstore became a smash comedy hit for NBC and featured Ferrera in her second headlining position for the network following the success of Ugly Betty. In addition to portraying the starring role of Amy Sosa, a single mother working her way up the ladder of the Cloud 9 Superstore, Ferrera also served as executive producer of the workplace sitcom.
Created by Justin Spitzer, Superstore follows a group of oddball employees who work at Cloud 9 store 1217, a discount warehouse store in St. Louis, Missouri. Superstore has received praise for doling out hilarious moments while tackling topical issues such as immigration, maternity leave, accessible healthcare, and pay equality. Garnering strong comparisons to The Office and Parks and Recreation, Superstore continues to earn high ratings for NBC and remains one of the most-watched programs on Hulu, next to Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Showcasing Ferrera's raw talent, Superstore placed the actress back in the spotlight after her roles in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Good Wife, and How to Train Your Dragon. Now, it appears that Superstore's key employee is officially resigning.
As reported to Deadline, Ferrera will be leaving Superstore following its current season 5, which wraps next month. Ferrera's exit arrives on the heels of the announcement that the series was renewed for season 6. As of this writing, the reasons remain unknown why Ferrera is leaving the series before the end of her contract, and how the writers will tackle Amy's exit. Experiencing radical life-changes during her run on Superstore, Ferrera expressed her gratitude for the time she spent on the series:
The last five years on 'Superstore' have been some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career. Producing, directing and acting with this wonderful cast and crew have given me opportunities to grow as a person and storyteller. I’m so grateful to my partners at NBC and Universal Television...and I’m most thankful to the brilliant Jason Spitzer for creating the funny, smart and relevant world of 'Superstore' and inviting me to be a part of it. As I start the next chapter for my family and career, I wish only the best, and much continued success, to my beloved 'Superstore' family.
Superstore faced numerous changes in the past year when Spitzer stepped down as showrunner and was replaced by Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green. Despite her exit from Superstore, Ferrera's career shows no sign of slowing down, as she is currently executive producing Netflix's new series Gentefied. Showrunners and writers of Superstore have a few weeks to formulate an appropriate exit for store manager Amy, who will make her final appearance at Cloud 9 on April 16.
Ferrera has been regarded as the anchor of Superstore, both on and off-screen. Popular series who bid farewell to a central character, such as Fox Mulder in The X-files, Fiona Gallagher in Shameless, and Michael Scott in The Office, tote a short shelf-life after the lead's exit. Ferrera has not stated if she would appear in the future series finale of Superstore, but the show could leave the door open for Amy to make a return. Superstore season 6 is expected to air this fall and will kick off with its landmark 100th episode, and the absence of beloved America Ferrera's Amelia "Amy" Sosa.
