The Big Bang Theory: Penny's 10 Biggest Mistakes (That We Can Learn From)

Nobody's perfect, but Penny from The Big Bang Theory was created to be this "perfect" vision of a woman. She's blonde and tanned, and was able to get along with a group of people she wouldn't typically hang out with. She was the perfect package.

However, being seemingly perfect has its downsides. Not many people take Penny seriously and judge her for being a beautiful woman dating a brilliant man. She may not be a genius like many of her closest friends but she has more common sense than a few of them, which gets her into trouble sometimes. After watching Penny grow for the past 12 seasons, we're taking a look at 10 of her biggest mistakes and how we can learn from them.

10 QUITTING YOUR JOB BEFORE HAVING A NEW JOB IS STRESSFUL

Penny moved to LA from Nebraska in search of stardom. She went to audition after audition but nothing really came of it. After years of rejection, she decided to put all her focus on acting and quit her job at the Cheesecake Factory.

While her idea was commendable, she still had bills and rent to pay. How was she planning on making a living if auditions didn't go her way? Leonard tried to warn her but she acted on instinct and quit anyway. Having a new job before quitting your old job makes for an easier financial transition.

9 WORKING WITH YOUR EX-BOYFRIEND ISN'T GOING TO MAKE YOUR SPOUSE HAPPY

Penny may have more common sense than Sheldon or Howard, but sometimes she totally ignores common courtesy in search of what's best for her. In the 10th season, Penny wasn't happy with her job as a pharmaceutical sales rep, which is why she became excited when her ex-boyfriend Zack offered a job at his marketing company.

The mistake wasn't working with her ex, her mistake was not talking it over thoroughly with Leonard and making sure he was okay with it. The job eventually fell through but it did cause a few disagreements in the couple's relationship. Working with exes can be tricky and should be handled delicately if in a new relationship.

8 BULLYING GETS YOU NOWHERE IN LIFE

In the "Speckerman Recurrence," Penny's husband Leonard confronts his high school bully, which makes Penny realize that she was also a bully in high school. Bernadette and Amy encouraged Penny to make amends with those she picked on, but who's to say if this made a difference?

Penny continued to bully Leonard from time to time whenever he said something too "dorky" or got excited over something she saw as insignificant. Being mean to others says more about the bully than the person being bullied.

7 WORDS CAN HURT...

Being careful with your words sounds like a warning given to children, but it's something adults would do well to consider too. Thanks to Penny's pretty appearance and sarcastic tone, she gets away with most of her insults, but there are times when they're taken to heart and she's left in an uncomfortable situation.

Instead of having a proper conversation in the second season with Howard about his perverted behavior and how uncomfortable he makes her feel, Penny explodes and says he'll "grow old and die alone." This realization sent Howard into a small depression. Her blunt honesty was also taken to heart by Amy when she told her she didn't like her wedding dress choice.

6 ...AND LIES GET YOU IN DEEPER TROUBLE

Lies are tossed around fairly often in The Big Bang Theory, but that's part of its charm. Penny is also no stranger to the common white lie, but some lies of hers end up really hurting her friends.

When Bernadette was pregnant for the first time, she asked Penny not to tell anybody at work because she didn't want to be viewed differently. Penny promised she wouldn't. But when news got back to Bernadette that some of her co-workers knew about her pregnancy, Penny swore she didn't tell. As soon as Bernie left, she admitted to Amy that she was the one who told everyone because she can't keep secrets. This broke Bernadette's heart, and she kicked Penny out of her office.

5 INTERVENING WITH LEONARD'S CHANCE AT FATHERHOOD

In the 12th and final season of The Big Bang Theory, Penny drops a bombshell on Leonard that she doesn't want children. While Leonard wasn't in a rush to have kids, he was devastated that he may not be a father. Things changed when Penny's ex-boyfriend Zack became infertile and asked Leonard for his sperm.

Seeing this as his only chance to procreate, he decided to go through with it. The situation was a complicated one but it was ultimately Leonard's choice. To spite him, Penny got her dad involved, and tried seducing Leonard when he was supposed to stay celibate for five days. The relationship was complicated but Penny could have reacted with more class and understanding.

4 ALLOWING OTHERS TO THINK LESS OF YOU CAN CATCH UP TO YOU

Penny is a strong-willed woman. She knows her worth and is honest with herself. Her group of friends may poke fun at her intelligence, her lack of a college degree, or not understanding what her husband does for work, but she doesn't stop them from making those comments. She rolls with the punches. But after a while, those kinds of remarks and insults can catch up to a person.

In the 11th season, Penny found a comet with Raj's telescope and was pretty excited about her discovery. When she found out Raj took credit for her discovery, Penny lost it and was tired of being taken advantage of, but was it too late to be taken seriously?

3 NOT INCLUDING FAMILY IN BIG EVENTS

Was it selfish of Penny and Leonard to elope? They didn't have any of their closest friends around to celebrate and they didn't tell their parents until after the fact. Sure, people could have watched the wedding online but they only told their close friends about it. When Leonard's mother Beverly found out about the nuptials, she was surprisingly upset that she wasn't invited or told about the big day. This caught Penny off-guard even though it seemed like common sense to tell your parents and in-laws about a wedding.

2 HIDING THINGS THAT AREN'T YOURS CAN LAND YOU IN HOT WATER

In the 10th season, Howard reveals to Leonard that Penny has been slowly taking things out of his room and placing them in storage. Leonard of course became upset with Penny, and she looked like a sneak who was showing controlling signs similar to Priya. Instead of hiding her husband's belongings, Penny could discussed remodeling the apartment in a more relaxed way.

1 FACE YOUR PROBLEMS INSTEAD OF RUNNING FROM THEM

When it comes to deep emotions, Penny flees. It took years for her to even come to terms with her deep feelings for Leonard. It took her even longer to tell him she loved him. Long-term commitments frighten her and when that happens, she typically butchers whatever it is she had planned. She behaved similarly in her job interview at Bernadette's company (and later when she had to prepare for the job), and she was so freaked out at Leonard's need to have a baby that she tried sabotaging it all together. If there's one thing Penny needed to work on (and that we can work on), it's facing her problems.
