In early March, The Outsider on HBO ended with a bang and a potential cliff-hanger, leaving many fans eager to find out if there will be a season 2.
The series, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, is about a small-town Little League baseball coach named Terry Maitland who is shockingly arrested for the murder of a young boy. Except something mysterious is at play because there's evidence that proves his guilt, including witness testimony and DNA, along with video footage that proves he was somewhere else at the time.
As the police force and a special private investigator try to uncover the truth in the aftermath of Terry's death, what they find out is more sinister than they could ever have imagined. Now that the first season has ended, what questions remains that we hope will be answered in a season 2?
10 Has Holly Been Scratched?
The biggest question is whether Holly was scratched by El Cuco or not. We know that El Cuco somehow takes over his latest victim through the transfer of a scratch from one infected person or entity to the next. We saw it happen over and over, including when Terry scratched Claude.
In the final scene, Holly is staring blankly at news reports about the case as she twirls her dreads. Distinctly on her forearm is a scratch. Did El Cuco do that? Did she get scratched when they cave started to collapse? It would make for a terrifying season if the very person who discovered the truth about El Cuco becomes its next victim.
9 What Happened to El Cuco?
Did El Cuco really die? We saw it get shot, then Ralph plunge a massive rock into its face just as it began morphing into the various people it had taken over. But something tells us this being won't die so easily. Surely someone down the line in history has done something similar and El Cuco still rose again.
Maybe El Cuco found itself a host in Holly somehow. Or perhaps El Cuco as Claude scratched someone before dying (our money is on the grandfather of the little boy who it almost abducted at the fair during their tousle on the ground.)
8 Does Ralph Finally Believe?
Ralph was the biggest skeptic from the beginning, refusing to believe not only Holly but also his wife, that there could be something beyond human understanding at play here. But by the end, he seemed to be fully on board.
Not only did he look El Cuco in the face, watching it magically transform its face in front of his eyes, but he also saw how it took on the identity of Claude. Ralph must finally believe, but will he try to rationalize what happened and find some scientific explanation or is he totally on board? The fact that he told Holly he'd be willing to work with her again suggests that he might now be a full believer.
7 Will Glory and the Kids Be OK?
Glory had been put through the wringer, not only having to deal with accusations that her husband was a child killer but then also dealing with his death and her own internal struggles wondering if it could have been true.
She had a hard time with the kids in school, was fired from her job, and was generally shunned by the neighborhood. In the end, Terry was deemed innocent. But will things be OK for Glory and the kids? Will she win her lawsuit and move away or insist on rebuilding their lives where they are?
6 Whose Face Did D.A. Kenneth Hayes See In the Video?
In the end, District Attorney Kenneth Hayes realizes Terry was innocent all along and they had the wrong guy. He is sent a video showing footage of the suspected perpetrator, which is really El Cuco on the ground after being pummelled when trying to abduct a young boy.
Except for the face, he should see is that of Claude Bolton, since that was the identity El Cuco had taken on at that time. Did he see Claude's face? Seeing as the gang would not want to have Claude wrongfully convicted for something he didn't do, did they Photostop someone else's face onto the footage, like Jack's?
5 What Will Claude Do Next?
Claude was clearly very emotional after the events. Not only did he witness his brother, the only living family he had left, die right in front of him, but he also came face-to-face with the entity that was taking over his mind for so long. He saw the creature who looked just like him and shot it, resulting in the cave almost collapsing.
He escaped with minor injuries but was clearly haunted by everything. Not to mention that in that cave is where many of his own ancestors perished. Will Claude be able to put his life back together?
4 Will Maria Canales Get Out of Jail?
We forgot that El Cuco had other victims before Terry Maitland, including one man who killed himself in prison, and Maria Canales, who is presumably still alive in jail. She was convicted of killing a young boy and was clearly innocent. But without making El Cuco's existence public, they can't prove this.
Did the police pin that murder on Jack as well in an effort to have Maria released? She is, after all, the catalyst that led Holly to the existence of El Cuco in the first place. So we hope they don't leave her to rot in jail as a sacrificial lamb.
3 Why Didn't El Cuco Just Kill Ralph?
Throughout the series, El Cuco kept making threats to Ralph. In one scene, Ralph sees his dead son urging him to "let go" of him. Was this really a hallucination of his son or was it El Cuco toying with Ralph? And if the latter, why would it want him to let go when the grief is exactly what it feeds on?
But even when his wife Jeannie tells him she was visited by El Cuco who told her to make her husband stop or they will both die, he didn't. Were these just empty threats? Is El Cuco not as powerful as we think it is?
2 How Will Tamika React to the News About Jack?
One character we forgot about is Tamika, Jack's partner on the police force who went on maternity leave after having a baby. Having worked so closely with Jack, presumably for a long time, she knows something is up with him and continuously questions him about it.
At one point, she even has a nightmare that some creature is about to steal her baby. As a close friend of Jack's, chances are she will not take the accusations of him being a murderer, much less a child murderer, lightly. Will they fill her in on the real story or leave her in the dark to do some investigating of her own?
1 Why Did Ralph See The Dead Bolton Kids?
Right before leaving the cave, Ralph saw a vision of the two deceased Bolton boys who had originally got lost in the cave decades ago. Several members of the family went looking for them, the cave collapsed, and they all perished.
Was this more of a heavenly sight, with these children trying to warn Ralph that El Cuco wasn't dead and he needed to go back and finish the job? Or was this just his own subconscious manifesting in the form of the boys, hinting that he needs to protect the remaining Bolton man, Claude. Hopefully, we'll learn more if there's a season 2 and see if Ralph continues to see things.
