Anybody who’s seen Doctor Who is aware of Rose Tyler, the first companion after the series returned from a long hiatus. Although she’s been gone from the show for over a decade, Rose’s impact will always be felt as the direction of the series was established during her tenure.
While we’ve previously looked into how Rose matches up against other companions, to truly do her character justice, she deserves a list of her own where we assess what made Rose the perfect companion for the Doctor. 10 She Taught The Doctor How To Cope With Loss
While the Ninth Doctor had some great times during his tenure, one thing he was never good at was dealing with the surge of emotions when it came to the matter of losing people. He would go beside himself with grief here, something that got better due to Rose’s influence.
As he traveled more with Rose, he had her support anytime he was overwhelmed by memories of the Time War or when suffering losses in adventures. Rose’s constant presence, during which she would give the Doctor both time to grieve and offer words of comfort, enabled the Doctor to learn to cope with loss once more without letting it break his spirit.
9 Her Ability To Adapt Anywhere
Some misinterpret Rose’s readiness to whatever the Doctor told her to do as her being obsessed with him. However, that’s really not the case, with the reality being that Rose was just a person who enjoyed blending in every setting.
The best example would be when she had her bubbly personality even when she encountered the queen in the past, and agreed to go with the flow whenever she and the Doctor were supposed to be undercover. Her tendency not to argue with the Doctor was the reason why they made such a great team, since Rose made the best of any situation.
8 Always Looking To Save Lives
While the Doctor eventually became rather ambivalent toward others by the time he became his tenth incarnation, Rose always had the survival of others in mind. Case in point was when she went so far as to try and help a Dalek, a being that doesn’t even understand empathy.
It was also due to Rose that a number of characters were rescued, most significantly Captain Jack, whom she even brought back when under the influence of the Bad Wolf.
7 Her Tendency To Make The Doctor Laugh
We’ve seen plenty of companions by this point, with all of them varying in their relationship with the Doctor. In the matter of Rose, she might be the one who made him laugh the most. In each of their appearances together, one could see the Doctor grinning ear to ear on just about every occasion.
The two would make fun their priority first and foremost, and Rose’s ability to adapt to her surroundings brought plenty of jokes that she liked to share with the Doctor to make light of their situation. This comedic flair was helpful in particular for the Ninth Doctor, who severely needed this influence after the Time War.
6 She Was Completely Faithful To The Doctor
Even the best of companions have had moments where their association with the Doctor seemed to have been at an end; not where Rose was concerned, though. Her loyalty to him was to the point where she was willing to say goodbye to her mother forever just so she could be with him.
This also meant that Rose was perfectly willing to die for the Doctor, and there was no situation that would make her back out. The most striking of which would be when she brought upon the Bad Wolf so she could rescue the Ninth Doctor, even when she could’ve just walked away and saved herself.
5 The Doctor Never Forgot Her
The Doctor goes to great lengths to forget about his companions, so much so that he doesn’t mention former companions to new ones. However, Rose was the clear exception, as he would never miss a moment to talk about her to future companions, even years after he’d been separated from her. It was also the reason why the interface of the Moment used Rose's image to appeal to the War Doctor.
This kind of attachment didn’t diminish with time either, as the Eleventh Doctor took to mentioning Rose in passing, indicating he had her at the back of his mind then as well. Finally, the Twelfth Doctor also flashed back to Rose before his regeneration, at a point where the Doctor had last seen Rose almost two thousand years prior!
4 She Was Always Willing To Make Friends
Rose had the distinction of meeting the most of the Doctor’s companions on “Nuwho” and got along splendidly with each of them. While she initially had some tension with Sarah Jane, this quickly turned into a firm friendship.
In the many places that Rose and the Doctor visited, it was Rose who would blend in faster as she would take to forming new friendships almost instantly. Captain Jack and Mickey became companions solely due to Rose’s connections to them, and she always had a welcoming attitude toward new characters. This is even more noticeable in the extended stories of the comics.
3 She Inhabited The Curious Spirit Of A Doctor Who Companion
At the heart of it, a companion on Doctor Who is meant to act as an audience surrogate by evoking the same sense of wonder that viewers have seeing the many different worlds the Doctor visits. In this area, Rose was just like the avid Doctor Who fan the show deserves.
Her curiosity was boundless, having confessed to the Doctor that she would be traveling with him “forever,” and didn’t develop any ambivalence toward visiting newer settings. This allowed her to be relatable to the audience, as one could imagine being just like Rose in the places the Doctor took her.
2 She Made The Doctor Willing To Love Again
The love story of the Doctor and Rose has become more popular as the years have gone by, as this is an angle that hasn’t been replicated since. The unique factor here had to do with how the Doctor fell in love with her because she was the one who made him feel anything other than guilt.
After reinvigorating his sense of adventure through Rose, the Doctor also opened himself up to romance in a mentality that had never been seen before. This led to the Tenth Doctor being dubbed as the romantic Doctor, mainly because he learned how through Rose’s influence he could actually find happiness.
1 The Doctor Regenerated Only Because Of Her
Not once, but twice it was due to Rose that the Doctor had the will to undergo his regeneration. And both times he did so by making her the last face that his particular regeneration saw. As the Ninth Doctor, he finally admitted he was “fantastic” because Rose was too, before becoming his next incarnation.
As the Tenth Doctor, visited Rose last because he couldn’t let that incarnation die without seeing the companion he loved most. In fact, seeing Rose was also the last time the Tenth Doctor smiled, following which he let go of the resistance he’d put up with regeneration.
