Will Netflix release Queen Sono season 2? Created by comedian Kagiso Lediga, the six-episode Queen Sono season 1 marks the first African original series for the streaming service, and stars Quantico actress Pearl Thusi as a government spy. The ground-breaking series originally debuted in February 2020.
Queen Sono season 1 on Netflix follows the titular protagonist (Thusi) as she deals with personal and professional conflict. At work, Queen senses that the Special Operations Group Chief Director, Sid (Sechaba Morojele), may have ulterior motives while pursuing leads. At home, Queen thinks about her former colleague and boyfriend Shandu (Vuyo Dabula), who is now the leader of the rebel group Watu Wema. She's also traumatized by the death of her mother Safiya, a South African revolutionary who was publicly assassinated years prior. During Queen Sono season 1, the protagonist spends most of her energy investigating Superior Solutions, a company led by cold-hearted Russian business mogul Ekaterina Gromova (Kate Liquorish).
In the penultimate episode of Queen Sono season 1, Watu Wema takes responsibility for a terror tack on Johannesburg's Gautrain rail system. Meanwhile, Queen learns crucial information about her mother's murder and nearly executes her boss, Sid. Will these plots be continued in Queen Sono season 2 on Netflix?
Netflix hasn't ordered Queen Sono season 2. If the streaming service does move forward with new episodes, the announcement probably won't be made until mid-April 2020. In general, Netflix waits three to six weeks after new season premieres before making renewal or cancellation decisions. At this point, Queen Sono season 2 isn't a guarantee, and Netflix will need to figure out if subscribers are merely checking out parts of episodes or committing to the series as a whole.
If Netflix greenlights Queen Sono season 2, new episodes will presumably be filmed over a two to three month stretch later in 2020. If there aren't any significant production delays, the same schedule will most likely be kept. So, we'll predict that Queen Sono season 2 will release on Friday, February 26, 2021.
Queen Sono season 1 on Netflix ends with the protagonist successfully thwarting a terrorist attack at a Johannesburg soccer game. First, Queen uses her intelligence in a television control room and manages to locate the suspect. She then runs him down and delivers a proper beatdown. Yet, the primary conflict of Queen Sono season 1 remains unresolved, as Shandu becomes even more radicalized as a rebel leader and Ekaterina personally murders Queen's grandmother. Essentially, there's a huge political mess in Johannesburg that could expand throughout Africa.
In Queen Sono season 2, Ekaterina will undoubtedly have more power because the president will be forced to declare a state of emergency. Incidentally, Shandu's rebel group will receive all the funding they need from Superior Solutions. But here's how the narrative will most likely play out: Shandu will betray Ekaterina, he'll make some bad decisions, and then help Queen unravel mysteries from the past about her mother's assassination. In addition, Sid has revealed that he was in love with Queen's mother, Safiya, and essentially admits to being scared of more powerful forces. So, expect Queen to live up to her promise that she'll "spill the blood" in Queen Sono season 2 on Netflix.
