The Pizza Planet truck Easter egg in Pixar's Onward has been revealed. With the release of the 22nd Pixar movie, viewers around the world now have the opportunity to see the studio's latest animated adventure. Onward focuses on a road trip adventure between two elvish brothers Ian and Barley, voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, respectively, as they try to complete a spell that will bring their father back to life for one day.
In traditional Pixar fashion, the story is filled with humor and heart, but Onward also packs a lot of references to other Pixar movies. One constant Easter egg for Pixar is the appearance of the famous Pizza Planet truck that first debuted in Toy Story. As a road trip movie, there are many opportunities for the yellow truck to appear in Onward. However, the latest Pixar film put a unique twist on the vehicle with a re-branding to fit Pizza Planet in the magical world. All references to Pizza Planet in Onward are made by using Pizza Realm instead.
When it comes to the appearance of the truck itself, the Pizza Realm delivery vehicle can be spotted during a scene involving the toll booth. As Barley and Ian make their way through the magical land, the modern-styled world sees them travel on a highway and come across a toll booth (appropriately manned by a troll). In the background of this shot, the Pizza Realm truck can be seen as it tries to get through the long line of cars. This appearance by the truck isn't the only Pizza Realm reference though, as the logo can be spotted on signage in the background of multiple scenes, as well as on a box in Barley's car.
After multiple appearances by Pizza Planet, Pixar cleverly found a way to make the references in Onward feel fresh through the redesign. Although the world that is established in Onward would still understand what a planet is, changing the name to Pizza Realm helps it fit the modern mystical approach of Onward. Now, it will be fascinating to see if Pizza Realm becomes a new Easter egg in future Pixar films, too.
In addition to the Pizza Planet Easter egg, Onward made sure to reference several other Pixar movies and traditions. The studio's recurring Triple Dent Gum brand is included in the film, while a nod to Room A113 at the California Institution of Arts - which has an important history with Pixar - is referenced by an "A113" police code. There were also movie specific callouts for Ratatouille, Brave, and more. Meanwhile, director Dan Scanlon recently confirmed he also managed to sneak in a reference to their upcoming film Soul. With so many Easter eggs to catch, including the redesigned Pizza Planet truck, Pixar enthusiasts have plenty of reasons to see Onward again to spot them all.
