The show Pretty Little Liars, a teen drama television series, aired from 2010 to 2017, and starred Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery, Ashley Benson as Hanna Marin, Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields, Sasha Pieterse as Alison DiLaurentis and Troian Bellisario as Spencer Hastings.

And while everyone has their favorite character, episode, season, relationship and moment from this incredible and exciting TV show, we want to talk about Spencer in particular. Yes, let’s cover, right here and right now, the five best and the five worst storylines on PLL, which all centered around this bright, brunette and beautiful main character.

10 Best: Toby

Obviously, at the top of the list is Toby Cavanaugh. He was misunderstood at first, but he ended up falling in love with Spencer and causing her to fall for him!

They bonded over French and Scrabble, and out of all the significant others on this show, Toby was, by far, one of the sweetest and best. From making Spenc a rocking chair to providing a helping hand/listening ear (at any time and to anyone), this was a very enjoyable storyline.

9 Worst: Caleb

When PLL jumped forward in time, all the main characters had grown up and moved away, in order to attend college, start careers and begin relationships with new people. Of course, they all ended up back in Rosewood, and during that time, Spencer and Caleb were a thing.

They had run into each other in Europe, and they were both single (as Hanna was engaged to Jordan and Toby was with Yvonne). But this was all wrong, especially for all the Haleb fans!

8 Best: Her Addiction To Pills

Hear us out: The fact that Spencer turned to any substance in an abusive way at all is not okay. However, it built up to some other big moments in her life and on the show, which will be touched upon down below.

So this was not a joyous plot point. But it made some sense, when thinking about the pressure from her parents, the truth about her biological family and the fact that she didn’t clearly remember the night that Ali disappeared.

7 Worst: Her Gummy Bears That Toby Ate

On a similar note, there was a time that Spenc got some special gummy bears from Sabrina, and Toby ended up eating them. First off, don’t steal a girl’s candy! Secondly, of course, this had to happen at a critical moment, right when Toby was needed personally and professionally.

This did not have to happen, and Spenc probably shouldn’t have been getting edibles in the first place.

6 Best: Being Admitted Into Radley

Just as it was not fun to watch this character struggle with addition, it was also not great to see her end up in Radley. Still, this plot point is going on the “best” side of this list.

Imagine finding out that a boyfriend is on the A-team. Imagine then finding that boyfriend’s body. Imagine having A in life at all! These girls went through a lot, and fans felt for them during the really dramatic moments like these. Plus, when looking at Spencer’s family’s history with Radley, this makes even more sense, and after being on the inside, it gave the Spencer even more of an advantage, when it came to sleuth work.

5 Worst: Not Telling Her Friends That Toby Was On The A-Team

This could be playing devil’s advocate, but why didn’t Spencer tell her friends about Toby? Sure, she had her reasons for keeping it to herself, and she had her reasons for joining the team, too. But it just seems like many problems could have been avoided.

And if these characters learned anything, it should have been to lean on each other, 100 percent, all the time, through the good and the bad.

4 Best: Finding Out Mary Was Her Biological Mother

Nearly every episode of this series left fans with their jaws dropped, and one of the biggest shocks of the entire story was when Mary told Spencer she was her biological mother.

At that moment, the characters and the audience did two things: They thought back on all that had happened, trying to connect all these pieces, and they thought ahead, thinking, “Okay… What now?”. It was epic.

3 Worst: Having A Twin

Now, the family twists could have ended there, but as everyone knows, there was another important member to learn about: Alex Drake. It turned out that Spenc was a separated twin, and A.D. had taken over the game.

On the one hand, it was cool that the twin theory was revealed, and it was amazing to finally get some answers. However, when looking at it all together, this is going to have to go on the “worst” side of the list. Plus, that accent was rough.

2 Best: Marco

Another relationship that Spenc had when the girls were all grown up was with Marco Furey. He was a detective, he was smart, and he was nice to look at, too. From their scene in the elevator to their trip to the rec center, these two had some entertaining time on the screen together.

Of course, Spencer made a mistake with a credit card, and Marco was investigating her, so it was never going to work out, long-term. Besides, everyone is rooting for Spoby. Still, this was a nice distraction… very nice indeed.

1 Worst: All Her Other Boy Problems

These main characters were pretty, and they were young, so there were a lot of significant others that came and went. However, Spencer Hastings was supposed to be the smart one of the group. Did that mean she was perfect and would never make mistakes?

No. But did she need to have flings with Wren and Ian and Jonny Raymond? No. And did the series need to end without showing her getting back officially with Toby? No. (But did it add even more drama to an already thrilling TV series...? Of course.)
