That '70s Show: 5 Reasons Why The Show Was Better Without Eric (& 5 Why It Was Worse)

That '70s Show was a sitcom that everyone loves for its youthful characters and experience growing up in the '70s. For fans that binged all 8 season of this show, they'll know that the main character, Eric Forman, didn't actually appear in the last season until the very last episode.

While the actor who played him, Topher Grace, focused on his movie career, fans were left to follow these characters without the center of their group. While some love Eric, some may not. Here are 5 reasons the show was way better without Eric in it, and 5 that prove it was worse with him gone.

10 Better: He's Kind Of Boring

Honestly, the show was almost the same without Eric, because his character wasn't all that interesting. Sure, he was supposed to be the main character, but he himself didn't really add a whole lot to the dynamics of the show.

He was a pretty static character that was, quite frankly, kind of boring. The show was almost just as funny without him in it, and the new characters in the last season added a different layer to the show.

9 Worse: His Relationship With Donna

One thing that pulled in viewers with definitely his budding relationship with Donna. Fans loved to see him struggle through high school dating life, and his and Donna's relationship was totally funny and relatable.

Of course, the last season had viewers pretty upset when he left her behind. There was no relationship to keep fans hooked, and that is definitely a reason that proves Eric made the show better.

8 Better: His Jokes (That Weren't Funny)

All of the characters are pretty good at making jokes, but it could definitely be argued that Eric was actually the least funny character on the show. Fans love laughing with Hyde and Kitty and Kelso, but are we ever really laughing at Eric?

One thing the last season didn't have was Eric's ill-timed and pathetic jokes, and honestly, the absence of these jokes definitely made the show a bit funnier and easier to tolerate. Usually, the only one laughing at Eric's jokes was, in fact, Eric.

7 Worse: His & Red's Bantering

One of the most pivotal parts of the show is Eric's relationship with his dad, Red Forman. Their relationship is definitely a rocky one, but a ton of the humor of this show relied on their bantering.

Plus, their relationship was kind of relatable and fun to follow, since the two of them try their hardest to actually get along with one another. This part of the show was certainly left out without Eric, which definitely has us feeling worse with him gone.

6 Better: His Dumb Decisions

Eric isn't exactly known for his wise decisions. While pretty much everyone in the group is a young person with some pretty dumb ideas, Eric's were just unnecessary and selfish. None of the "plans" he had really had any goal besides being dumb and create harm.

Honestly, most of them were just plain annoying, and his wild choices didn't even add much humor or dynamics to the show. Rather, fans were just rolling their eyes and wishing Eric would take a seat.

5 Worse: His & Hyde's Friendship

Steven Hyde is probably the most widely loved character on the show. He is interesting, dynamic, and incredibly funny. However, his friendship with Eric is different, and it's actually totally wholesome and pure.

Fans of the show loved experiencing all the feels between these two young men who are both misunderstood and just trying to live their lives. Plus, their humor and bantering are also wildly entertaining.

4 Better: His Offensive Jokes & Prejudice

Honestly, while most of Eric's jokes weren't that funny, some of them were actually pretty offensive. Sure, there are lots of parts of this show that purposefully incorporate offensive content, but Eric sometimes crosses the line.

From making himself "manly" because Donna can't be better than him to making fun of an overweight woman, fans were definitely a bit sick of his offensive jokes and prejudice towards people. Eric's ignorance was cringe-worthy and really wasn't missed.

3 Worse: His Kindness

Eric can be the most selfish and rude person on the show, but he also had pretty redeeming moments. He is a pretty good friend, and does pretty much everything he can for Hyde, Fez, Jackie, Kelso, and Donna.

His friendship definitely lifts our spirits, and actually adds a pretty good dynamic to the show. He is the core of their group, and without him, everyone's friendship seems a bit forced. This series was better with him as a friend.

2 Better: Donna Was Better Off

While Donna and Eric were the couple of the show, it's also argued that Donna was actually way better off without Eric. In the last season, fans see a side of Donna that they hadn't seen the first seven seasons. She is much more independent and has a chance to make relationships with people other than Eric.

To be honest, Eric is kind of annoying, and sometimes, the way he treats Donna and their relationship is nothing but frustrating. While he returns in the season finale to her, it was kind of refreshing to see Donna live her life without him.

1 Worse: He Was Relatable

Fans can say whatever they want about Eric Forman, but the truth of the matter is that he's actually a pretty relatable character. He's the most "regular' of the group, while everyone else has pretty exaggerated characteristics.

Eric, on the other hand, lets fans relate to all the struggles of growing up and surviving those terrible teenage years. Without Eric, there was little for fans of the show to really latch onto and put themselves right there in Point Place.
