Many of the characters on The Office are extremely over the top and ridiculous in how they act. Their extreme personalities and inappropriate behavior in the workplace is largely what made the series so successful as fans couldn’t get enough of the unique characters.
And of course, Dwight Schrute is one of the most memorable characters from the series, but his intense personality and eccentrics didn’t win him a lot of friends at Dunder Mifflin. He had many rivals throughout the series, and we’ve ranked each one of them to lead up to his biggest rival of all.
10 Kevin Malone
While Kevin wasn’t exactly a direct rival of Dwight’s because they weren’t ever really on an even playing field, it’s clear that Dwight never really liked Kevin.
He thought Kevin was incompetent and even dumb, and so it’s probably not all that surprising that Dwight ended up being the one to fire Kevin after Dwight become the manager. While this might have been deserved or might not have been, it’s clear that Dwight was never Kevin’s biggest fan.
9 Pam Beesly
Pam and Dwight had a rather interesting relationship. On the one hand, they were actually kind of friends and that friendship developed more over time.
On the other hand, they were also rivals because Pam was so close to Jim. Dwight also never quite respected Pam all the way, largely because he had a lot of sexist views, and Pam also would prank Dwight and get really frustrated with him. So confusingly, they were both good friends and also enemies at times.
8 Robert Lipton
Dwight had multiple affairs over the years with Angela when she was dating other men. Even after Angela married Senator Lipton, she still was having an affair with Dwight.
While Dwight’s rivalry with her husband might not have been super out in the open, it’s clear he felt himself in competition with him. He wanted Angela to be with him instead, and he very much believed (a belief that turned out to be true) that he was actually Angela’s son’s father.
7 Kelly Kapoor
One of the more interesting rivalries that Dwight had on the series was with Kelly Kapoor. These two never really got along, mostly because Kelly thought Dwight was really weird and even kind of creepy.
When Dwight tries to go up against her to keep her from getting the minority training program position, Kelly definitely got the upper hand on him. She could be just as sneaky as he was and a lot scarier at times, so Dwight had definitely met his match.
6 Corporate
Over the years, the different members of the corporation definitely posed a problem for Dwight and his goals. While he wanted to be promoted and become manager, corporate kept him from doing so in his mind.
While they didn’t give him a better job for many legitimate reasons, Dwight was never understanding of this. He also had some run-ins with them, such as the time he cut the face off of the medical training mannequin and got reprimanded.
5 Danny Cordray
Danny Cordray was the most direct business rival that Dwight had on the series, because he was really good at being a salesman. Both Dwight and Jim were threatened by Danny and the fact that he outsold them when he worked at Osprey Paper.
Dwight prided himself on being one of the best salesmen ever, so the fact that a person at another paper company was better than him it definitely made him feel jealous and annoyed.
4 Michael Scott
Dwight and Michael also had a rather complex and interesting relationship. Dwight isn’t the most normal person when it comes to emotions, and neither is Michael, so this isn’t surprising. They were friends at times, but they were also rivals.
Dwight spent a lot of his time in earlier seasons gunning to get Michael’s job, and he definitely thought he would do better at it even as he also tried to be Michael’s friend. While they did leave the series as friends, it wasn't always that clear cut.
3 Andy Bernard
Andy Bernard is another person that Dwight had a big rivalry with, and for a couple of different reasons. At first, he had a rivalry with Andy over being Michael’s second in command and over who was the better salesman. Andy might have briefly gotten the upper hand, but Dwight won in the end.
Then, they became rivals again when Angela started dating Andy and got engaged to him. This led to a stand-off between the two men as they fought over Angela.
2 Ryan Howard
Ryan Howard is someone that Dwight never got along with, and this is also largely in part because of Michael. Dwight always wanted Michael to hang out with him and think he was cool, but instead, Michael really wanted to be Ryan’s friend.
He would always compliment Ryan and put Dwight down, and it’s clear that this bothered Dwight. While Ryan was never as good at his job as Dwight was, it was frustrating for Dwight when he got the job at corporate.
1 Jim Halpert
Of course, the person who was Dwight’s biggest rival throughout The Office was Jim Halpert. These two were rivals from the start, and they were always getting under one another’s skin. Jim would pull pranks on Dwight all of the time, and Dwight would retaliate by annoying Jim even more.
Dwight also could never stand the fact that Jim often got promoted over him, and he often saw him as his enemy and rival when it came to work. However, in the end, these two actually became friends and cared about one another in their own unique ways. So, while they were the biggest rivals, they were also good friends.
