WoW Classic's Most Interesting Raid Wipe Yet Documented By Player

It never feels good to be in an MMO raid group that wipes on a tough boss, but in the case of one recent WoW Classic group, it at least happened in a novel way. Old-school raiders have been returning to World of Warcraft’s most iconic raids for months now, with some guilds clearing bosses within a week of the game’s release.

WoW Classic launched last year after high demand from players to return to what many saw as the golden days of the MMORPG. The vanilla version of the game was so popular that it doubled World of Warcraft’s subscriber count at launch, according to Blizzard. WoW Classic’s popularity has persisted since then, with Blizzard continuing to add content from early WoW patches to replicate the experience of being on the game’s servers.

Raids, difficult dungeons meant to be tackled by huge groups of players, are some of the most popular content in WoW Classic, and victory in their toughest battles is celebrated today just as it was more than a decade ago. At the same time, it’s just as painful when one mistake leads to a full wipe of the raid party. Reddit user Gromek999 recently shared one such moment with an unusual twist. While the group was attempting to take down Vaelastrasz the Corrupt, a boss of the Blackwing Lair raid added in February, the group’s main tank suddenly disappeared, leaving the rest of the group to get obliterated in seconds. As Gromek999 explains with a gif, the main tank was under the influence of a debuff called Burning Adrenaline when they accidentally used their Hearthstone. Since one of the effects of Burning Adrenaline is to make all spells cast instantly, the tank was immediately teleported home, rather than having the chance to cancel the spell during its usually lengthy cast time. With the main tank down, Vaelastrasz was able to pick off the squishier members of the party without any trouble.

For players who’d rather play the most current version of World of Warcraft than look to its past, the Shadowlands expansion revealed last year is still on its way. Scheduled for release in 2020, Shadowlands will take players to World of Warcraft’s version of the afterlife where they’ll align themselves with one of the factions that rule the realm.

Raiding in MMOs can get pretty serious, but the unfortunate Blackwing Lair group seemed to take its unusual wipe in stride. If nothing else, it shows that WoW Classic content can still surprise players years after it first appeared.
