10 Animated Sitcoms That Are Better Than Family Guy | ScreenRant

Family Guy was once TV's edgiest animated sitcom. Even though the show is in its eighteenth season, most fans would agree that the show's quality has declined over time. Yet, there are so many animated sitcoms that are just as racy, fun, and full of pop-culture references.

As we are seemingly in the Golden Age of the animated sitcoms, here is a list of ten animated sitcoms that are way better than Family Guy.

10 Paradise PD

Paradise PD is the closest to Family Guy in terms of its outrageous and obnoxious humor. Wild, vulgar and just plain bizarre, it follows the story of an inept small-town police department as they struggle to battle crime and their own stupidity.

The show's weird and yet complex characters make this show really fun, although it is easy to sometimes get lost in all their madness. Overall it is a really good modern raunchy comedy. The second season premiered on Netflix earlier this year and it is significantly better than the first season. Hopefully, it will just get better with time.

9 Final Space

The space-opera Final Space is easily the least well-known show on this list. The series follows Gary Goodspeed and his alien buddy Mooncake and their loveable misfit crew as they try to save the universe.

Unlike many of the more complex and involved shows on this list, Final Space is a lot sillier and just easy to watch. It is also a must-see for fans who love dopy sci-fi comedies.

8 Tuca & Bertie

Tuca & Bertie is probably the furthest away from Family Guy than other shows on this list. The show tells the story of two bird-women friends Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) and Bertie (Ali Wong) as they try to be grown-up adult women.

Although the show was very surreal and whimsical it was kept grounded by the relatableness of the main characters. Unfortunately, the show never really got the recognition it deserved and was often overshadowed by the two big Netflix hits Bojack Horseman and Big Mouth and was canceled after one season.

7 F Is For Family

Netflix has really had a big hand in the growth of animated sitcoms and one that always slips under the radar is F Is For Family. Set in the 1970s, it follows the dysfunctional Murphy family through their trials and tribulations.

Although the show feels very obnoxious and vulgar at first, fans are soon drawn into the intricacies of its characters. In many ways the show is very close to Family Guy, but with a little more heart. Like with many other shows on the list, it has gotten better and more nuanced over time so it is definitely a show worth sticking with.

6 The Boondocks

Easily the oldest show on this list, The Boondocks is perhaps still the most relevant. Following the black Freeman family, it takes a sharp and satirical look at socio-political problems like race, class, and culture.

Although the show only has a total of 55 episodes, almost every episode has a very strong and compelling story. Recently, HBO Max announced that they will reboot the series, therefore it is definitely worth catching up on the earlier seasons.

5 Disenchantment

Made by Simpsons and Futurama creator Matt Groening, Disenchantment is a quirky off-beat medieval comedy that follows the life of Princess Tiabeanie. Although not nearly as popular as Groening's other works, it is still a lot of fun with many intricate storylines and a couple of surprising twists and turns.

Princes Bean is rowdy, fierce and a little bit crazy and for those who have become tired of the consistent lazy and mean way Meg has been portrayed, it is a perfect example of the flawed yet fun female lead.

4 Big Mouth

Another Netflix show, Big Mouth is perhaps one of the most popular shows on this list. The show focuses on a group of 7th graders as they try to deal with puberty. One of the things that make this show so unique is that often puberty is portrayed as these super abstract thigs but Big Mouth cleverly decided to create cringy and awful hormone monsters that effectively illustrate those concepts.

The relatableness of the show makes it a  must-watch for everybody and the awkward and downright embarrassing humor makes many of us glad that we are no longer at that age.

3 Bob's Burgers

Bob's Burgers is probably the most wholesome show on the list. The show focuses on the working-class Blecher family and their hamburger restaurant. Unlike many of the other shows on the list, the humor in the show is a lot more subtle with a range of quirky main characters.

Overall, the show is perhaps easily the lightest and family friendliest show on this list which makes for a good change of pace form Family Guy's darker tone. Also, Bob is one of the most loved father's on TV and is certainly far better than Peter Griffin.

2 Archer

Archer is one of the most fun shows on this list. Following the life of secret agent Sterling Archer and his colleagues who work for a privately owned intelligence company, the show is a racy and ridiculous take on the spy genre.

Full of pop-culture references, weird and complex characters, the show is in many ways a cleverer version of Family Guy. Therefore, fans of the show are eagerly awaiting the new season when Archer finally comes out of his three season-long coma.

1 Bojack Horseman

Surely by now, everyone knows about the highly successful and critically acclaimed show, Bojack Horseman. It tells the story of a washed-up 90s actor and his quest to stay relevant. Although it first seemed like an everyday obnoxious comedy, the show very soon takes a far more complex tone, with each season delving deeper into its own madness and darkness.

There aren't many shows that can creatively and humorously deal with issues like addiction, depression, and sexism but Bojack Horseman does it almost effortlessly. In many ways, the show now represents a new type of animated sitcom that is far removed from the tone-deaf and one-dimensional shows like Family Guy.
